I used staight pipe in the top hose and had a rad neck brazed into it. The rad cap seals and the overflow is led thorgh a pipe to the base of a none-presurized expansion tank. When the water cools it draws the displaced coolant back into the top hose keeping it nicely full.

My home-made expansion tank is actualy a stainless steel "tea caddy" from Wilkos - call me cheap if you want, but its nicely polished and saved me about £60 on a polished ally one!
