Chevy flywheels come in two sizes. Small, 153 tooth and large 168 tooth. If your new starter does not engage the flywheel teeth, then you have a small flywheel, with the new starter for a large flywheel, or vise versa. To be sure, get someone to manual crank the engine and count the teeth.
The easiest fix is to get a starter motor which incorporates dual fitment with 4 bolt holes (use one of the two sets).
