Re: Fuel pump / filter prob

After burning out two of the external Bosch beauties at nearly £100 a pop I now always put a swirl pot into the fuel tank itself and suspend a pump in the fuel thereby ensuring no fuel starvation and a cool, long running pump.

BMW do a nice line in "in tank" swirl pots and pumps and are readily available in scrappies. The fuel pressure regulator in the fuel rail should keep the fuel at the right pressure so don't be too worried abot the model of car you rob the pump off, just make sure its over 3 ltr and bobs your uncle.

The Lexus donors I've used have a nice ECU that uses speed sensors in the gearbox to step down the voltage to the fuel pump from 12v to 9v at cruise or low fuelling requirements thereby ensuring that the pump noise is kept to a minimum and the pump lasts forever.......a nice trick for a luxury silent executive barge however I think I may throw this bit of electronic wizardry away as I can't hear the fuel pump at idle anyway...

I also put a filter just above the fuel outlet in the tank (ie as close after the pump as possible) and I use the metal canister jobs from Cooper, my favourite atm is the Cooper FIG 7004 which is perfect for anything up to 5 ltr and only costs just over £7....

Carbs, who needs 'em, they are just a badly controlled fuel leak after all.........

Cheers,
