I use some industrial 10mm thick Macrolon machine guard material for my "tart screen" and it is extremely useful in reducing the buffeting especially on motorways etc. It can still scratch but does not stand out too much visually like a mesh screen would.
With regard to the radiator mesh, Pilgrim's seem to be very fine but the B&Q version works very well being slightly more "open".
