The filter material used in these is a fabric sandwiched between two wire gauze layers - so you shouldn't need the wire mesh on the inner and outer faces. The filter assembly should be rigid enough, and the extra mesh would just cut down the airflow, which is one of the main reasons for choosing a K&N, IMO.

The ultimate in terms of airflow has to be the one below - maximum surface area by ditching the filter top. However, I've yet to find one this side of the pond!
