I think the cost reflects the fact that the sheet metal has to be curved two ways to meet the shape of the body (quite difficult to achieve - try it some time).

Personally I wouldn't fit them until after the SVA and that way the examiner can't test them.

I would suggest putting small trim around the edges. Some people secure them using rivets and some by adhesive (like sikaflex)
