I used either 3/4 or 1" thick marine grade ply on top of my bulkhead, and a machine finished stainless sheet on top of that. The ply is thick enough to span any depressions in the original bulkhead surface and the sheeting is srewed through it to the bulkhead with rivnut fasteners so that it can be taken off to get at other bolts etc. The stainless is edged at the back with the small 'D' section edging that has a woven finish to it, and at the front I've used the same as Ian has - B&Q's best Aluminium angle, polished up.
