Dont forget if you are right handed start the row of numbers from the right hand side not the left; so if your number is 123456 start with the 6; sounds odd, but it weill give you a lovely even row as you are not covering up the letters already stamped with your hand so have a reference for level and spacing; we used to stamp an awful lot of press tools at work, so we got pretty good at it; and that was the main knack (plus a lump hammer). Oh and make sure you stamp the plate against a good hard surface like an anvil or something really solid!

The machine mart stamps are perfectly ok on normal material like MS and ally; just need a really good single blow; they do wear quite quickly though.
