I think the way I did it was to get their build insurance. I paid for a full year then added cover notes on each time I needed to take the car anywhere.
These cost about £30 a go but the total cost of my build insurance was deducted from my first years premium once I was registered.
It may have changed in the 3 years since I did it but might be worth asking.
