I run the SD1 RV8 in a Sumo and can get the starter motor out quite easily.
The only real issue is the weight of the damned thing !!
With the wiring disconnected it should be simple case of removing the two bolts and sliding slightly forward.
The only thing I could imagine to be a problem is if you used the left hand engine mount on the right hand side ?
For example, my right hand engine mount angles forwards. This places the bobbins more towards the front of the engine. If your have used them on the wrong sides they could place the bobbins further back and hence the problem with the access to the starter.
