So it looks like I was right that they plumbed it the wrong way. Glad I checked.

I believe the off set 'out' pipe on the adapter fitted to the engine should go to the off set 'in' connector of the remote filter. The out pipe of the remote filter should then go off to the oil cooler before returning back to the engine adapters central 'in' pipe fitting.
