Internal boot hinges on AK?

Anyone done it? Is it, in fact, possible? Cheers

Yes I did it when I built mine several years ago now. I used the same technique as the bonnet hinge, but added an angle iron upright either side of the rear wheel inners to give me something to fasten to and used a heavily cranked piece in order to stop the boot catching the body when I opened it. I measured the distances drew it up built it then spent a couple of weeks modifying it as I didn't allow enough crank to clear the boot/ body

I used a piece of thick-walled tube the width of the inner wings with captive nuts welded in each end under the body (as near to the underside of the rear deck as possible), I then drilled through the inner wings and fixed each end with M12 bolts and large penny washers. (This almost mirrors AK’s design for bonnet hinges)

In line with each stud on the boot lid I welded two pieces of flat bar with holes drilled in them to act as pivots for a piece of round bar which I bent into a quadrant with a straight piece of same welded upright at approx 90 degrees to the quadrant with a flat welded plate on top that the boot lids studs locate through.

The beauty of this system is that you’re not bonding to the body thus avoiding drawing the fibreglass from underneath, also you can rotate the thick-walled tube to adjust the position of the pivot.

hi there can anyone send me some pictures and help on how to make some internal boot brackets for my ak427 as after 3 weeks of trying various shapes if brackets all my boot lid will do when i try to open it is dive straight into the rain channel and get jammed

hi there andy yes if you could post some pics it would be a big help because i think other people with internal brackets have had the same problem but i just cant seem to find out how to make the boot lift instead of just diving straight into the rain channel

Some pictures of designs which work would be good, I agree.

In the mean time I would suggest that the basic criteria for stopping the lid jamming in the rain channel would be to get the pivot point up under the body as as close to the inside face of the body skin as possible. The distance it is away away from the opening is not critical but the further it is away the bigger your 'c' shape will need to be to reach around the opening when the boot is opened.
