Is the current trend for increasingly obscene Avatars a good thing? I tend to look at the club site while my wife is working on her PC next to me, I now find myself having to quickly navigate away from certain threads due to the distastful nature of some members avatars when she looks over. I also feel lucky I dont yet have kids to ask "whats that lady doing without any knickers on?"
Not to mention I actually find some of them offensive. Starting to sound like an old man now, well at least not a dirty old man....

Personally I'm not bothered by them but I can see your point about kids and stuff.

I always liked this forum due to the self constraint of it's members. It's rare that you see swearing or obscene language on these pages and if it's necessary most people abbreviate it with stars and other symbols.

I look at these pages during tea breaks and lunch breaks at work and working in an office with other people and female staff I too ocasionally find myself leaving posts due to the avatars.

Just my opinion, But lets keep it work and family safe please.

Craig.

Funny this should come up as I had a comment from someone at work while browsing at lunchtime today. I do not mind but it does make using at work a bit difficult for me.

Certainly no worse than some of the avatars on most car sites, And a lot less than can be seen in the Daily Press/Tv Ads etc. Some of the "Offending Avatars" actually belong to female members so they can't be that offended   Come On Guys (and gals) If this country gets anymore PC we may as well GIVE UP! Chill Eh

Fortunately my 4 year old son and 8 year old daughter do not read the Sun but they do play in the living room where my PC is. The t1tty "T" shirt is OK but fat 4rsed slapper with no under wear is awkward especially when it is at the beginning of our most prolific posters messages.

Bring back the turtle Mike, the kids loved it.

I don't think getting a life is the point.

I am not personally offended by any of the avatars I have seen on this site, But others around me may be. As I said I work in a busy office with male and female staff. The last thing I want is for this site to be blocked by the IT department due to a few peoples choice of avatars. I certainly wouldn't start looking for Porn sites at work or in front of the family so why should we have it here? OK it's not that bad here yet but maybe in the future....

What have fast cars got to do with naked women, except in marketing men's fantasies?
I have driven fast cars for many years now and the only place I have come across any link between naked/scantily clad women and cars is backstreet garages where some grease monkey has a callendar hanging on the wall.

Calm down ladies, it's just a commercial.

For those of you worried about getting clobbered by your IT department fascisties, I wouldn't worry. I would worry far more about breaching the fair use policy by pratting around on forums when you should be working. MikeT's bare arse avatar isn't porn for crying out load, it's just an arse. Now if it was a front bottom that would be over the top for a forum such as this in my opinion. Still wouldn't offend me however.

Can't believe this has been brought up as a topic on here, no room for the PC brigade in my world.

If you're not careful, Mike will change his avatar to a picture of himself.
Now that would really scare the children!

I think maybe Mike's avatar is a bit near the knuckle, but it doesn't bother me. I don't have to worry about some spotty dickhead in the IT department blocking the site though.
I consider this an adult site really, but can see Dave's point if his kids are looking over his shoulder.

I am not against it at all personaly.

However in todays working enviroment it is not possible for me to view this site at work or on my work lap-top because of the avatars (it's not that I can't, I just won't risk it).
In 2003, 6 of my colleagues were suspended pending an enquiery due to cartoon and written jokes of the postcard type. There is a growing awareness in the office enviroment that companies can and will dismiss employees for wanting to be seen to be dealing with unlawfull use of office PC's.

Don't risk it at work on any site not just this one, I've seen what companies can do to innocent people and it ain't nice.Keep it to your home pc then they can't do you for your job.

Oh no F**k me the pc brigade have finally arrived here to

This is again a simple case of if your not using the Pc then why are you looking over the shoulder of someone who is if you may not like what you see :x

If you don't want to run the risk of your wife , kids , boss , work collegues etc looking over your shoulder whilst you are on the pc then may I suggest you don't do it when there around :x

Or is that to easy for some people :?:

Lets get real guys (and girls) the internet and general everyday stuff is no worse than here.

I suppose you're all going to ban The Sun from your homes then and drive around with blinfolds on your wife and kids because of the posters of nearly naked women advertising a product on a billboard.

Sorry to be so blunt but as with everything thing if you don't like it either don't look or turn it off :D

I have to agree with dave, if you are viewing the forum during the day which a feel quite a few of us do during the day, you do need to careful who is around as not to offend. I personnel have an office which is about 75% female so I am carefull. Although some of the conversation that they have in the office make my toes curl.

If you are viewing the forum during the day then chances are you are skiving off work and may be repremanded by your employer for just that.

As this forum is for everyone including people who are here for pleasure and are only able to access it when they are at home then there is a good chance that these people will have children. You might have even been one yourself once.

Gareth.
Bill posters rarely have pictures of some slappers twat pointing at you.
Would you like to be the one who has to explain to an 8 year old the merits of staring up some tarts chuff. Innocence is a precious thing and when it's gone it's gone. I'm trying to preserve my children as children for as long as is what I feel is right
Sadly the west wing of our castle is under restoration and I am having to slum it in the banqueting hall with the rest of the family with my computer during the evenings. I could send them outside for 6-7 hours each evening when I'm on this forum reading/posting/advising and pi55 taking but sometimes it's cold.

If your kids are able to see a small avatar, they are also able to read parts of the posts.
Seeing as you are one of those against "artistic" avatars on the forum, can you please explain to the innocent people reading this what is a "slappers twat"?

Do you never watch tv programmes/films at home, sometimes showing a nipple or two in their content?
If so, where are the kids at that time?

She does however understand that no knickers is bad and knickers on is good.
maybe a little to taxing for some members on here.

I must register my support for Carig and Dave.

I am no prude and quite like the sight of a nice curve or two, but when I am cruising our website, I find some images a little over the top.

Surely the PC brigade (who ever they are) have never had a cobra and I find it an insult that whenever someone expresses a point of view that differs from that of others, they are labelled PC or are subject to some other form of ridicule.

If you want someone to ridicule, try the animal activists who want an innocent polar bear cub to be put to sleep to protect it rights !

Points of view are exactly that, someones own unalienable right to express themselves.

Usually ridicule only shows the ridiculer's own inadequacies.

Time to hop back in...

I thought that might stir up a debate, as I said in my original post I personally found some of the more racey avatars offensive. This is my personal view which was making me feel uncomfortable when reading posts, so Id thought Id canvas opinion.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I respect you all for your views, from which ever side of the fence you hail.

The internet is a varied place and images of that nature (and far far worse I accept) can be found with ease. However I was not out to find such images, I wasnt looking at www.cobraar$entitsoutclub.com, if I was I would know what to expect.

Im not a prude, in the right place the naked female form is a thing of beauty especially if done in black and white, against a nice background..........sorry mind wandered back on topic. I just dont think it works next a to a post about grease nipples. :P

And anyway, whats wrong with a Ford engine? At least the dizzy's at the right end

gareth08

FFs what has a polar bear got to do with this :!: :!: :!: :!:

Lets put it simply,

would you go and put on an 12 , 15 or 18 rated film which may have the possability of sex , violence bad language etc on whilst your kids are around.

If your answer is no then why would you be looking at a internet site that may have some or all the above in when your kids etc are around. :?: :?:

As far as I'm aware this site is not advertised as an age restricted site etc but the vast majority of users know what it may contain so why can't you use your common sense and use it when the kids wife etc arn't around if you feel that you are unable to justify a few images that may be shown from time to time.

As for those of you that use it at work surely you are being paid to be at work not be on this site and if you have free time during work and are worried about the consequences of others seeing it don't look at it.

If your company has a policy in place of no sexual content then why are you breaking that policy anyway. :?: :?: and if they don't have a policy but you feel it may offens others then wait until you have you're own free time.

I'm with andy on this, we have a forum for NWS posts, keep naked women there, not on every page.

I have nothing in the slightest against pictures of naked women, and if you need a pointer on some sites to get some i could probably er, research some for you, but this is about the cars and the speed right?

Lets keep the T & A where it belongs.

Which reminds me, i really must fix my avatar. Now where's that picture of a big hairy bloke with his knob out...

There is no warnings about site content or restricted access which requires age varification. Like there is on sites that are aimed at the over 18's
youtube doesn't show nipples but there is an age restriction on anything slightly racey, and they show executions!.

If you want naked women Google recons there are currently around 17,300,000 sites and 122,000,000 sites for "ass" you can view without the need to drag this site down the "The Sun" level.

I feel just feel sorry for people who can't tell the difference between nudity and obscenity. I have two sub-teen daughters and nudity is not really a big issue - "it's a woman with no knickers on and yes, that is rather rude!" You try watching prime time television with kids of that age, the questions that arise from that are far worse...

Looking at the poll results, only 16%(only 10 people) think "artistic" avatars are bad.
The rest don`t care, think they are good or think they are nice and grubby.
As for the other few thousand members who didn`t vote, obviously they don`t care either.

So it looks like the results are in, put it back Mike.

I'm finding the strength of sentiment expressed over this quite entertaining. I believe the phrase wind em up and let em go is quite apt.

To be honest I cant be arsed, pardon the pun, with this anymore, more impotant things in life to worry about.

As I originally said, I was expressing my view, to which I was and remain entitled to.

The choice of avatar made by some posters is meaning that I cannot visit the site for fear of upsetting my customers, or, in the case at this moment, the lady sitting next to me on the train. It's embarrassing, and as a visiting I.T. consultant currently working at part of the NHS, I cannot risk upsetting people at work.
I commute 135 miles to my place of work, I am uncomfortable visiting the site on the trains.
I have my own web-connected laptop at work, but I can't even risk visiting the site at lunch-time on my own machine for fear of upsetting people that work for my customer.

My wife has commented on the poor taste of some of the avatars, and I don't want to risk visiting the site while my four-year-old son is around either. When the political position in some homes is tricky as far as keeping an expensive toy is concerned, this kind of unhelpful, selfish abuse of the site is seriously unhelpful.

These avatars represent a denial of service attack upon the site as far as I am concerned. I thought this was a Cobra Replica site, not a porn site.

When one of the most helpful people on the site (Dave) suggests that he is finding it harder to use the site because of some off-topic content in avatars, I'd suggest it is a bad idea to continue to have those avatars on the site. My car is finished, and I'm trying to be helpful in my visits to the site. If I can't visit the site, I can't help people and that diminishes the value of the site (especially if Dave finds it harder to visit).

Very sad of Saddleworth.

"IT department fascisties"!!! Now I'm offended!! The IT department I work in are deffinately NOT PC or fascists!! (I could think of a few other names though!!)

What we really need is a way of turning off Avatars in your user Profile.

That way the people who use this website for discussing cars and helping people, can have the option of doing it without bare arses splashed all over the page.

I know I would take advantage of this if it was an option. Any chance Rob?

If wsnaith had turned off avatars, he wouldn't have contacted me asking for pictures of mounting a 454 in a Dax, since he saw mine (on-topic) in my avatar and wanted to know more about it.
If that's the only way though, yes, I'd gladly take an option to be able to prevent my view including avatars, but again, that does diminish the value of the site.
Just a little care for others, especially for such a major contributor as Dave would be the best thing though I would have thought.

Couldn't agree more Diggle

If people showed common sense and respect to others using the website there would be no need for this option.

First line from Wikipedia...

An avatar (abbreviations include AV, ava, avv, avvie and/or avvy) is an Internet user's representation of himself or herself,

Me too, I thought I'd pushed the avatar to the the limit without being offensive. I work on a client site and don't want to look at this site, even during lunch at the moment. Look at the poll guys, it speaks for itself surely. :?

I agree, some of the avatars are a bit iffy, but I am not in the nieve belief that this site is for children (or in some ways women).
The majority of people who come here are adult males and as such the content of the site will reflect this fact.

This is how censorship and the 'pc' thing gets rolling. A voiciferious few against a quiet majority. :(

I understand the issues involved with people/children looking over your shoulder, but I believe this cannot be 'legislated' for practically.

I think perhaps Mike's avatar stepped over the mark slightly, but who is going to be the one to decide what does and doesn't over step the mark?
I've seen much worse than Mike's avatar here, but it's been Mike 'carrying the can' because he is such a prolific poster.

My avatar is (in my opinion) not offensive, if anyone thinks differently please feel free to express your views. Maybe you'll change my mind.

Should we have a note in the Forum rules section that gives advice about avatars and pictures in general? Rob, your opinions?

Lets get some perspective here.

Its not majority rule whatsoever, its my rule.

We don't allow vulgar posts, we have a NWS section for that which is opt in, therefore it stands to reason that we don't allow vulgar avatars, if you want to use vulgar avatars, then there are lots of other forums that people can use.

This site is a great site and we have a relatively clean and fun board, more so than other forums, and I would like it to stay that way.

If you want to see tits and arse, then so here http://www.thesun.co.uk/

Please keep the avatars to an acceptable level, and before some smart arse asks who defines an acceptable level, or what an acceptable level is, I define the acceptable level, and you can use your common sense as to what an acceptable level is.

Thanks to all and sundry.

Diggle, with respect, I didn't say it was majority rule here. As Rob rightly says, it's his rule. That's why I asked for his input. :D

Now you bring religion into it. Don't even think about getting me started on religion! :x

I think, (whichever side I'm on) that this forum is the better for having these, sometimes heated debates. It gets people, if only a few, to express their opinions. This then helps Rob to govern the site in a way that we are all broadly happy with. :D
I'm not that bothered if all avatars have to adhere to a non-sexual and non-contraversial code. As Wilf says, it's no 'biggie'. I would be concerned however, that it had been changed for a voiciferous few and not for the general population of this forum.
I am not a pc person I'm afraid, as my friends will atest to. If I have to be pc to come here, then I won't.

We can leave stuff like that for the NWS forum, and if I find or am alerted to any avatars that I don't think are appropriate then I will either discuss it with the user or delete them.

Is mine ok Robert?? :?

Well it's still there at the moment so I guess yes. :D

Not sure what would happen though if you were to remove the offending underwear

Maybe a full beaver or chocolat canal on display is offensive to some animal lovers on here :D

Thats what I thought!!

I view this site on a regular basis as a guest.

I'm sorry my first post is a winge but quite frankly I do find these explicit avatars offensive. In the past I would have told anyone who asked that this is a forum for true motor enthusiasts and suitable for all the family unfortunately this is no longer the case.

A lot of forum members are also members of the CRC who on the whole have a good reputation at events we attend. I would hate to think we would not be welcome at some events because of the image some users of this site project.

As a woman who loves cobras I hope we go back to the good old days of good car pics and discussions.

Hi Ma,

Thanks for your post.

I must say I agree with you, I spend a lot of time telling people how great the CRC is and I think these avatars undermine my efforts.

I know the site is male orientated but there are a lot of wives / partners who also love everything cobra and I'm sure some must be put off by these sorts of things, perhaps thats why the forum is a lot quieter than it used to be.

Not Really a good way for a Newbie to introduce themselves on a Forum Ma  Most people tend to slide gently into conversations for a while before they gain the right to Flame people they don't know

Chris,

So you think Miket knows me? he refers to me as a 'Domestic Engineer' in what I read as a derogatory manner, I was just replying to that.

Wake up Carol, the term "Domestic Engineer" is a well known phrase for a housewife.

This thread does a pretty good job of demonstrating the downside of forums (fora?). Tempers running high, netiquette out of the window, newbies being flamed, insults flying, and hardening of attitudes as the thread progresses. And for what?

I'm no prude, but I agree with others who have posted here that these types of avatars are undesirable, for the reasons already mentioned. The poll (albeit at present with votes from only 72 members) shows a 50:50 split in opinion. Folks, this isn't an issue of right or wrong - it's one of tolerance of and respect for differing opinions - the thing that makes us humans the interesting creatures we are.

This is a tricky one for the moderators, but IMO this thread does not bode well for the future of this forum. If people decide to either abandon the forum or reduce access to it, then I suggest the forum as a whole will suffer.

So why not save the "laddish" content for the "not work safe" part of the forum (that's what it's there for), and let the rest of the forum return to its previous tolerant (well, most of the time!) state?

Please?
