Guys,

Not Cobra related but am hoping one of the RV8 guys can help me with a problem a friend of mine is experiencing who races a TR7 which is powered by an RV8. He recently had the motor stroked & the engine was dyno'd on a rig using his existing wiring loom & the engine ran fine. He transplanted the engine back in the TR7 & although the motor was cranking it wasnít even trying to run. He has carried out significant investigations into this problem such as checking all connections in the loom are good etc but he still has not nailed the issue. He tells me he has removed a spark plug, earthed it & cranked the engine & didnít see a spark, interestingly though when he applies a separate 12V power supply to the DTA ECU the engine cranks & fires no problems?? Another thing he has noted is that the tacho' needle will bounce around erratically when the engine is being cranked. The separate power supply issue would lead you to the conclusion the DTA ECU may not be getting enough juice to it, however he has changed the battery & this has made no difference. If anyone can help with this problem I would be very grateful, alternatively if anyone knows a good RV8 diagnostic specialist in the Nottís area that would also be appreciated.

Regards,
Martyn

I would start by checking the supply to the ECU from the car.

It might be possible that the ECU is loosing it's power supply during cranking or after the key is released from the start position.

Also check the coil has a 12V supply when the ignition is on and during cranking.

Craig.

See Post number 7 of:-

Run through the tests.
Probably a relay as they are not the best.

If your mate is called called Martin, he's my next door neighbour and I heard his car running about an hour ago so maybe he's fixed it.
Just been round and he's got it running as you now know. but he's not very confident the battery was the only problem ....we are looking again tomorrow pm
