View Full Version : Gardner Douglas Cobra for £13,500?

23-02-14, 11:23 AM

I'm thinking of selling my GD cobra and I'm looking for a bit of advice regarding the asking price (see pics in members gallery from last year). The car isn't immaculate, doesn't have all the bling and wouldn't justify the usual £20K+ GD asking prices. However, I don't want to give it away and wouldn't want to accept less than £13,500. Does this seem reasonable? and what price do you think I should I advertise it for?

I bought the kit as an abandoned project and completed the SVA & registration in 2006 (passed 1st time). Although the car has been MOT'd & taxed every year since SVA I've only managed to do a total of 1690 miles. Which is why I'm now considering selling it!

The engine is a rover 3,500 V8 with 5 speed manual transmission. Starts first time, every time, and returns 32mpg on a run (trip to Stoneleigh last year).
Jag running gear with GD's MK3 body. No Hallibrands but I think the bolt on wires suit the car better.
No hood but includes custom made mohair tonneau cover.
Loads of spares.

Bad bits......
The body is still in dark green gel coat. I did intend to paint it but it polishes up nicely and doesn't suffer from stone chips.
boot carpeting not finished (carpet available). Was never a priority but might finish this before selling.
The chassis has been powdercoated from new and waxoiled internally but now has some light surface rust where the power coating has chipped away.

I'm thinking of advertising the cobra on Pistonheads, Ebay etc about a month before Stoneleigh and then taking the car down to Stoneleigh with a "for sale" sign.

Many thanks for any suggestions & advice.
Cheers, Phil

At the end of the day it is a GD nothing at all wrong with gel coat and the wheels look really good as you say, I wouldn't settle for less than £20,000. Don't undervalue what you have there.

I've got to agree with Tinka Phil, £13.500 is too low.

I'd echo that - it's surely got to be high teens if not the best part of £20k

Quick buck in that car for somebody for sure, I would say take off the side markers and fit cobra badges, fit a centre cap to steering wheel, get it on PH with better pics and a good description at £19,000 and smile....sorted

I see a fair price at around £17k for that, wont need much to bling it up for someone.

Many thanks for the replies guys, looks like I might be a bit out on the pricing.

I think I'll try for £16K and see what happens. I saved quite a bit buying it as an abandoned project and the pictures make the gel coat look better than it is :-(

Thanks again, I'll buy you a pint if I see you at Stoneleigh :-)

Hi Phil,

The make is right GD so should sell . Gel is fine and I have seen some good gel finishes also someone can spray it if they like .If you go in at 16k someone will be offering you £14-£15 you can always drop a price.
I guess you will have some dealers calling you .

Hi phill is your cobra still for sale please

Dont over discounted the car or else potential buyers will think there is something wrong with it and discount it from their search. People will assume low price, low quality. I'd follow Steve's advice £19,000 or sensible offers and include lads of pictures including interior, engine bay.
