October

Hi to you all. Our visit to The Queen's Head, Hawkedon for September’s meet proved very popular with visitors from far and wide. The obligatory ‘photo opportunity in front of the pub’ was slightly soured by the presence of a pre-existing Ford Focus but, as they say over there, ‘c’est la vie’ (it was a very nice Ford Focus). The 427 camp was represented by Paul & Clare, Richard, Mike and Steve; the 289s by Andy and Mark. Plus, Colin brought along his SLK to enjoy the blue sky (with hints of dark cloud!) So 6 cobras and a Merc, quite respectable for the middle of September.
Eileen, having broken her foot, is still in a plaster cast, so is still not able to blast the black beast around the countryside. The subject of bone density and susceptibility of breaking bones came up. Eileen has had a bone density test and was informed she has the bone density of a 25-year-old. It was generally accepted that she should give it back!
However, being a bunch of simple folk, our lunchtime (packet of crisps for your writer as the kitchen was super busy) topics of conversation ranged from the nitty gritty of turkey farming, frozen ready meals and fuel injection to the very real issue of comfortable seats in a cobra. Paul is considering a re-trim of his car and Clare is very much of the opinion that the seats could do with being somewhat more comfortable than the normal Dax fibreglass shells with a smear of leather. Any recommendations of alternative seating gratefully received.
Any who, despite not being able to enjoy a Sunday roast, the pub was very accommodating and various diners came out to enjoy our ‘gentlemen start your engines’ and departure. Thanks to Paul & Clare, a good choice of pub.

We managed to visit the Essex County Show early in September. Sensibly, Eileen used a rented Red Cross wheel chair. The show is on a huge scale and, initially, could have been quite exhausting. However, the job of wheelchair propulsion was mostly taken over by our very keen and eager 6 months old Staffie puppy. Steve merely had to point the chair on the right direction. The car show part of the event had a very nice Pontiac GTO entered but Steve was rather taken by a 6 wheel Scammell with a monster Gardner diesel engine.

There’s not many events left for the rest of the year. If you know of any other worthwhile events, please let us know.

We have a plan for our annual Christmas Evening Meal. Mark & Sandra Bright have suggested The Case, Assington, near Sudbury on Friday 2nd December 2016, around 19:00. We’ve reserved a table for 12 and they require a deposit of £5 per person. They are offering a Christmas themed menu of 2 courses for £16.95 or 3 courses for £22.95 and have a limited number of rooms available for those wishing to stay over.
If you intend to come along, please email us on thebirches@hotmail.com as soon as possible so that we can confirm with The Case. http://www.thecaserestaurantwithrooms.co.uk/

…..and so, to this month’s meet on Sunday 16th October @ 12:00.
We’re off to East Suffolk this month. We visited this pub in the summer for a very pleasant Bank Holiday beer festival and the food is also very good. Just down the road is Alton Reservoir which is a good place for a Sunday afternoon walk if the weather behaves -
The White Horse, White Horse Hill, Tattingstone, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP9 2NU
http://whitehorsetattingstone.co.uk/ and (01473) 328060. Don’t forget to phone and book if you intend to eat.
The pub is dog friendly so we’ll bring along the dawg.

We’ll continue to populate the ‘3rd Sunday’ calendar with interesting pubs to visit in our usual ‘On Tour’ format.
If you have a recommendation or favourite venue, please let us know.
November 2016 - West Norfolk
December 2016 – Christmas meal
January 2017 - East Norfolk

etc.

We’re always on the lookout for pub recommendations and event info for 2017 – if you have a recommendation or favourite venue, please let us know.
