July

Hi to you all, It seems such a long time ago now, but did anyone go to the Classic Car Show at Wymondham Rugby Club last month?

Steve and Andy Soar made their annual pilgrimage to Le Sarthe for the Le Mans 24 Hours, despite a last-minute vehicle substitution. Plan A was to take our Dax, but torrential rain and the forecast of more triggered Plan B – take the Monaro. The trip down was uneventful (if a little moist), with side trips to Honfleur, Pegasus Bridge and Arromanche for lunch and D-Day sightseeing. The usual camping / barbecue / drinking activities were experienced at the circuit, plus a side trip to the Hotel de France in La Chartre-sur-le-Loir; with another overall win in the race for the Toyota TS050 prototype hybrid. The GTE class proved the most entertaining, with entries from Corvette, Aston Martin, Porsche, Ferrari, BMW and Ford providing wheel to wheel action for 24 hours. Plans are already brewing for next year, plus it’s a double whammy with the Le Mans Classic returning in 2020 also.

Also fresh in the memory is last weekends Goodwood Festival of Speed. Aston Martin were commemorated on this year’s central sculpture in front of the house. A lone Aston Martin DBR1 was featured as the car won the World Sportscar Championship in 1959 with the final race being at the Goodwood circuit. Understandably, as there are only 5 original cars in existence and each is worth a fair wedge of cash, the actual display car was provided by a certain A S Motorsport – and very impressive it looked too. The usual F1 paddock was rammed with fanboys, but the more discerning punter was seen admiring the corral of Porsche 917s and the Edwardian aero engined monsters such as Babs, the Napier Railton and the Beast of Turin (weren’t they Steve!). As always, a great day(s) out.

Which neatly brings us on to this month’s meet on Sunday 21st July. We’re off to East Norfolk (nearly) this month. How about the Five Bells Inn, Southwold Road, South Cove, Wrentham, NR34 7JD this month?

Don’t forget to phone and book if you intend to eat. Make a day of it with a saunter along Southwold Pier why don’t you.

We’ll continue to populate the ‘3rd Sunday’ calendar with interesting pubs to visit in our usual ‘On Tour’ format.
