View Full Version : Hard Top for Cobra Replicas

I realise this may be sacrilege but does anyone have a removable hard top for a Cobra replica? If so would you recommend it and where can I get one preferably in the UK.

I got my replica in Manila and had to leave sooner than expected so the manufacurer could only make me a tonneau. Seeing as I do not have any car with a roof I thought it would be good to make the Cobra more passenger friendly for the rain.

Hi Alex, and welcome,

hard tops are available for some Cobra replicas in the UK.
But unfortunately not for all.
I believe GD do one as do Hawk Cars (although I believe Mr Hawkridge doesn't like to sell them to anyone unless it's for a Hawk)

It depends what kit you have. Dax don't do one themselves.

It may be possible to modify one to suit your car if you have the technology and the will.

Many thanks - this really does help get me heading in the right direction.

Good to see the forum working. No doubt I'll be using it later when I try and get the SVA approval!

Hi Alex,
I know David Brookes is making a hardtop for a DAX (modified from another supplier) - I got some pictures from him.
You can find his email adres on this forum.

Hi Alex,

My Dax used to have a hardtop - original produced by Dax themselfs.
After it got damaged, I went back to Dax, but alas they have
disposed of their mold. . . :-(

On the upside, I am going to approach Dax, to see if its ok to make
a mold of my old hat so I can make up a new one.

Pat thanks for that - can't quite understand the logic of destroying the mould but there you go!

I suspect that if you or someone were to produce a mould for a Dax hard top, you would have a nice little earner on your hands.
Is that rear window glass or plastic?

Hi Pat

I have been interested in the Dax hard top for some time.

Dax told me that they had disposed of the mold because it didnt fit very well and that the customers they supplied were not that happy. The reason was that it had been adapted from a 289 mold.

From what I can seen from the pictures it looks ok to me.

If you decide to go ahead with taking a mold from you roof let me know I would be interested in having a roof made. Please let me know if I can be of any help.

regards
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

The hard top on my fitted A1 and there was very few, if no modifications to it.

I have been thinking of making a mould, as I would prefer to have
a hard top again. If so, depending on the interest, I may make
a few (maybe more)???

If anybody is interested, please feel free to e-mail /or post
thoughts and opinions in the forum.

Kind regards,
Patrick.

I would be interested if you are making a mould but my replica is from Manila (with a 1963 289 engine and Shelby's autograph on the glovebox no less!) so I am fairly sure it won't be a 100% snug fit. Happy to get one and then do the work to fit - what kind of cost are we looking at?

Cheers

Alex

PS Off on a trip for 2 weeks so will be out of touch after today.

As my earlier email to you, this just to confirm, I would be interested in one when you have sorted your ideas on it. Indication of price would also be good.
Best wishes.

Hi Alex / Bruce,

Apology time - I haven't started the mould yet,
but I am planning to in the next few weeks.

As for cost - not sure at the moment.
Most of the hardtops I have seen are a little too expensive
for what they are, thought I do respect the hard work that
has gone in to their production. However, I shall know better
after I have made the second one.

Shall keep you all posted.

Blue skies,
Pat

I have an aluminium hard top that was made for 39PH when I was involved in classic restoration about 28 yrs ago. It is in poor condition and was never completed, however it is currently with an alloy body specialist and we hope to restore it and see if it fits my Gravetti body.
If it does we may take a mould and see about producing some. At least it should fit a 289.
Will let y'all know if it happens but dont hold your breath!

Let's get this right: you are going to ask a replica manufacturer if it is OK to spring a mould off someone else's product?:)

No. I was in the classic sports/racing car restoration business and our business built this hard top in 1978. I own it legitamately. I can do what I like with it surely?

Hi Pat - I have mentioned I am interested in a Dax hardtop should you get around to making them - have Dax given you the green light to remake and do you think you will?

Here's two i made earlier.
Lemans style for Dax.
The Blue on requires the boot lid to be modified (That's if you want to get into it with the top fitted)
The black one is currently under development and has a rear hatch that opens so that the boot can be accessed without having to remove the top. Tis one has been under development for qite some time now as the rear screen will be glass and getting a bespoke glass made is a pain in the 4ss.

The type on the blue car without a split boot lid isn't so bad as it seems.
If you want to carry luggage then you can put it into the passenger footwell. If you have a passenger then the luggage needs to go into the boot, this is not a problem because the top un clips in a couple of minuits and the passenger can help you lift the top off. get the boot open and then pop the top back on.....................Not Ideal for Tesco, but when was the last time you went to Tesco in your Cobra??????? :thumb:

The glass taped in position on the black roof is a sample and didn't fit as well as I would have liked and is being re jigged.
The glass will be a bonded on screen with a black borde with fade out, tinted and heated.

I have got to say, those roofs are the best by far I have ever seen, they just flow so well with the car, top job :thumb:

Now how much is a Dax :-(

Hi All

Dont know what model you have but I know Bob at Cobretti can supply a hardtop for his cars. I think it was in the region of £450 - £500. Hope this helps!

Alas, my roof replication has taken a knock, complements of the neighbours from hell
and the resultant relocation. . .

Sorry to all.

A Quick update on The DB Replicas Dax LeMans hard top that I'm developing.

The glass rear screens will start arriving the first week in March (I am told by the manufacturer).
If this happens and there is time to get one fitted to the black car previously pictured then the car with hard top fitted will be being exhibited at the Stafford show on the 12th and 13th of March on the DB Replicas stand.:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Fingers crossed, the development of this has been going on since September 2003.:-(

Hi Kurrmet.
Due to the glass arriving at the eleventh hour and them some, we will not have time to get the top painted and will have to show it in the gel coat but you'll be able to get the idea.......Unless it blows off on the way there!!!!!!
