View Full Version : Jag Diff overheating???

I believe my Jag Power Lok diff is overheating.
After a run out last weekend I noticed a few drops of oil on the driveway below the rear diff. I then noticed the whole of the rear of the car was covered in an oil mist.
Lately, when pushing the car hard, I have noticed a heavy oil smell (gear not engine).
There are no obvious leaks to the case &/or seals of the diff.
I believe the diff is heating so much it is boiling the oil & throwing it out of the vent pipe.
Can anyone confirm whether this is possible or probable? If it is, then I guess the unit must be badly worn even though it was sold to me as a rebuilt unit 9 months ago.
Perhaps I am at the limit of the diffs power capability ie appx, 500 bhp.
Does anyone know the power these diffs can handle?
Many thanks

It does sound like you may be cooking it.
Do you have the rear ally cover with cooling fins on? if not it might help.
I wouldn't have thought 500 bhp was too bad for it afterall they were designed to handle V12 power and torque.
If you have bearings that are wearing that will make it run hot.
I destroyed a 3.54 when I cooked it (forgot to put the oil in).

Kev,
No ally cover, standard pressed steel only.
I think you are right about a good unit being able to handle the power.

Compared with my (now redundant) 3.07 unit, this 3.31 runs considerably hotter & makes a little more noise.

Does anyone know where I can get a thorough good quality rebuild?

The best place to get it rebuilt and I think you will find a lot of people who will recommend him is Ward Engineering he advertises in Snake Torque and all the kit car Mag's

You could ask Russell Ram very nicely, if you cross his palm with silver he might do it for you.
