"How much more tax will Thieving Gormless Gorden demand?"

Sorry but this is NOT a tax (for a change).

As pointed out by Steve in one of the first replies, this is about you having to pay to use a performers property, that he has produced to make a living, to entertain the public. I don't personally see a problem here really - would it be OK if I came round and borrowed your car to entertain some people with test drives (for free)? Probably not.

Admittedly there is a fine line between using a (for instance) radio or CD player for your own entertainment and using it for public 'broadcast'. If I had one on in my garage at home, should i turn it off when my mate comes round? - however the sentiment of the requirement is there to protect musicians and to earn them income from the use of their property.

Russ

That's fine Russell - but the radio station has already paid performers' royalties to broadcast the song in the first place.

This is just another example of "reduce the unemployment figures by making jobs up on the back of sneak taxation" by politicians. Same as "Safety Camera Partnerships", "Congestion charges", CRB checks for newsagents, etc etc etc.

Talking of sneak taxation - any higher rate taxpayers should be up in arms at the fact that basic personal allowances have gone up by £600 supposedly to compensate for the 10p tax rate abolition - but the threshold for paying higher rate tax has been REDUCED BY THE SAME AMOUNT! Thus higher rate taxpayers will be a nett £120 worse off.

I detest this government so very much. One day I hope one of the lying thieves will try to shake my hand whilst canvassing.............

Wilf I really dont see how politicians are involved in this one (much as Id like to blame them LOL) its a performing rights issue and nowt to do with govt local, central or otherwise.Good point about the radio stations, but the theory is radio blaring in a public place is a second performance so the performer should get rights for that too; Im not defending it, but its been this way since before some of us were born.
As 'news' goes this is as fresh as 'Carroll Shelby has a dodgy ticker'...

Oh yeah and I wish Gordon Brown would drop dead as well Wilf; as far as Im concerned he's a scheming lying pension robbing tax hiding double dealing scottish twot (and an insult to all decent scots folk) -ah that feels better LOL

"politicians not involed"? Who passed the enabling legislation?

BTW - I got the tax thing wrong. The higher rate threshold is actually being reduced by £1200 - so another £480 wings its way to Gordo then.

I can sort of see where you coming from but its a very long and tenuous link; the enabling legislation is really based (originally) on general copyright, and without it many of us would be in a sorry state.

Re your other problem I suggest dividends

Where are you getting your figures from wilf? according to my accountants tables the higher rate threshhold has gone up by £1400.
07-08 £34600
08-09 £36000.

Your accountant has the figures "pre further adjustment".

Have a look here: 2008/09 Tax Rates and Allowances

Yes, this is not a tax in itself, but if your employer has to pay so that you may listen to a radio in your work place then there is yet another benefit which may become taxable. This in turn could become a valid reason to increase company vehicle tax!

I didn't think I needed to spell it out. Sorry I should have made myself clear.
