Is this for real?

Heard today on another forum I visit occasionally, That playing the radio in your workplace is now illegal unless you have a license.

The guy in the thread said that his place of work has had to remove all radios unless they paid a fee of a few thousand pounds per year to use them which they didn't want to do.

Looking at this web page it looks real. Welcome to the MCPS-PRS Alliance

This sort of thing really makes me want to go on a killing spree!

Yes, I believe this is right, no one in their right mind will pay. As the radio stations already pay to broadcast the songs, seems 'wrong' to have to pay again.

This has been around for decades, the PRS performing rights society was set up to protect artists interests on public performance of their copyright works; if you have a business and use a CD for your 'on hold' music, or play a radio in the workplace you should have a PRS licence; check out most shops that play music they will have the little blue prs label in their window; nothing new here sorry

reality is youre only going to get stitched for a licence if youre a biggish company; I'm not defending it but this really is about 25 year old 'news' (one of the downfalls of the net)

I guessed it had been around for a while but first I'd heard of it.

The chap in question was p155ed off as he worked in a motor factors and always had the radio on during the day. Apparently because they have customers coming and going during the day they should have a license.

Just seems like another way to make more money off the general public.

Craig.

Yep, and I guess Paul McCartney and co dont need it!! As I understand it the majority of PRS signees are less well known artists and the PRS income makes a difference. I guess its a bit like Carrol Shelby wanting royalties on the cobra concept; understandable, but none of us want to pay for it LOL Mind you PRS has its work cut out now what with file sharing, and U tube!!

There are actually 2 licences you need. The first one is the PRS (Performing Rights Society) and the second is a PPL (Public Performance Licence - I think).
