Seems like we're both right; it depends what cinema you go to. The older theatres (such as IMax) use polarised or LCD technology and the newer ones use the system I mentioned, I think it is just called Dolby 3D. I presume that having shot the film with Cameron's 3D camera you can distribute it in a variety of formats for the different cinemas.

Just been to see the penultimate showing (in 3D) of Avatar. What an experience, I'm not sure how effective the film would have been in 2D but in 3D it was excellent.
