Number Plates

Was thinking of moving my front reg. plate. I currently have a proper plate suspended on a pole in the nose of the car but was thinking of moving it and replacing it with a sticker on top of the nose / leading edge of the bonnet area, either that or not having a front plate at all ...

This begs the question: 'Is this legal?' as I seem to remember that only a rear plate is legally required.

Was doing a bit of homework on the DVLA homepage and found the following:

All registration marks including marks purchased through DVLA's sales scheme must be displayed in accordance with The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 (obtainable from Her Majesties Stationary Office).

A number plate must be displayed at the front and rear of motor vehicles (with some exceptions).

Q - Are stick-on number plates legal?

A - No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements.

Am now not sure if even a sticker is legal and apathy got the better of me before I made my way down to the Stationary (sic) office

Anyone got any idea what is OK and what's not before I get busted?

I have been pulled a number of times by the plod, and have asked the nicer ones the same question.

The answer I have been given is that it is not strictly legal, however as there is no obvious position on which to fix the number plate, and with it being a historic shape, there is no other option.

The example plod gave me was E types etc, they have the same problem, so you should be all right. They said it is obviously better to have one than not at all.

Most of the force live in the real world as opposed to the DVLA who live in cloud cuckoo land.

Actually, having read the British Standard which the number plate has to conform to, it looks to be a very grey area with no clear definition.

The British Standard sets out the physical characteristics on the number plate. This includes:

Visibility Yes, anyone can see it as the front of the car is low enough
Strength Yes, they are strong, have you tried to pull one off?
Reflectivity Yes, unfortunately it does reflect when you go past a speed trap.........

As long as it conforms to the above, which any adhesive plate does, then it should be suitable.

Where did you get the front sticker from?

Is it simply a sticker and does it damage the paintwork at all if you ever wanted to remove it?

By the way, I hope you are looking after my sun visors. I have had to drive with a squint for the last few weeks. Should be sorted after the weekend as I am taking the car back to Andy at the weekend for a shakedown

They are a sticker, and will not damage the paint when removed, at least they haven't on mine.

The sun visors are wonderful, and thanks very much for the kind donation to the ROB747G charity.

Do you want to buy another GD, as I might be selling mine to fund another GD.

I think that having 2 GDs might be a little excessive as I would struggle to drive them both at the same time. Might have a word with the missus to see if she needs something a little more nippy to run to Sainsbury's. She is having some trouble beating the buses away from the lights in the Mini Clubman

What kind of prices would you consider as %age vs build cost?

Will have to see if I can persuade someone in the area to take it off your hands ..

A little birdie told me you were thinking of switching to a Euro chassis .. Didn't realise that the rest might go the same way .. Would you be keeping your engine + blowers or have you just got money to burn?

So which is it Lola or GT?

I have this urge to go back racing, so I am looking at the various series I can enter and then matching the series regulations to the spec of the car ie, blower or no blower, etc etc.
