Engine Arrival

Taken a day off work today to take delivery of my engine and gearbox all the way from Southern Automotive in Georgia, USA. Ordered late March, arrived in Felixstowe last week in September, and delivered today outside my garage door. Fantastic!

I must admit I was aprehensive about ordering such a costly item from thousands of miles away and having to pay in full before it was dispatched but I am absolutely delighted with the engine, packaging, service from SA and the shipping company.

My question is, I won't be running the engine until next spring so can I have your advice as to keeping it in top condition through the winter months. Do I fill it with oil and prime the engine? Do I rig up a water system and fill it with water and antifreeze? Should I keep turning the engine over on a regular basis? etc etc.

Cheers Ian

It will be standing on and wrapped up in several blankets.

Now that is a real object d'art.

In terms of laying it up, I assume it has been test run and broken in at Southern, so personally I would re-prime the oil system (whip the dizzy out and spin the oil pump shaft until oil comes out of the valve gear), then squirt some oil down the spark plug holes, turn it over a couple of times, put the whole thing into a big plastic bag with some dessicant bags in it and leave it in a dark corner until you need it.

Also - 'phone Bill or Susan and ask their advice too!

If you're not going to be touching it for ages put a blanket over the top of it and an open bag of spildri absorbent granuels in the corner of the box and screw the box back together. I had mine boxed for over 1 year, didn't have to turn over or do anything. Started first time. Mine was a chevy but i imagine the same thing applys.

Hi Ian, looks awesome but maybe I am biased as I have one very similar in the garage waiting to be installed. All the best Tony.

Ian,
Who did you use for the shipping ? I'll be bringing a car in from the US very soon and I need to decide on a shipping company.
Thanks,
Paul
