Ford 351 Windsor Quad 48 IDA webber conversion

Chaps,
After having selected an appropriate angine (Ford 351W)I have been examining all the pictures I can find of original Cobra engine bays.

From what I can see a lot of the racing 427's had a quad IDA conversion. Since deciding this is one of the key features that I would like to include into my build (Along with pin drive wheels)I have been looking at the feasability of this.

Does anyone have experience of this conversion? Known issues etc.
It is most likely that I will purchase my engine in the US and and hvae found a kit supplier here :

http://www.piercemanifolds.com/hotrodproducts.htm

See bottom left Ford Secion (1/2 way down page)

The standard engine build I have been considering is :

http://www.fordcobraengines.com/Cobra396_485_carb.html

I know that there are issues fitting even a stock Victor Jr. inlet manifold under the bonnet that can result in modifying the top end of the manifold.

Can anyone tell me what the distance is between the bottom of the inlet manifold and the bonnet on a Ford 351Windsor in a Crendon boddied Crendon car. (Not older style AK bodyshell)?

I want to make sure I have all my bases covered before going for the purchase.

Any help appreciated,
Andy

Hi Andy,

I Cant help you with the first few paragraphs but I know that Wilf Leek has a Windsor with Victor Junior Inlet Manifold and oval COBRA air cleaner and it all fits under his bonnet.

Wilf had the first Crendon 427 body (not an AK).

Most of the guys with Crendons, appear to go the Cleveland route (me also). Hope to complete mine within the next 8 weeks and will drop the engine/transmission in next week.:}

If you decide upon a Crendon, believe me, you will not be dissapointed
superb quality etc etc.

Suggest you speak to John Kerr concerning specific dimensions. Good Luck

Regards

RE: Ford 351 Windsor Quad 48 IDA webber conversion

David,
Yep I have chatted with Wilf on occasion and I also agree that the Crendon is excellent quality and has great attention to detail. (Nice stand presentation at Soneleigh)

What made you go for a 351 Cleveland ?

Arn't tuning parts harder to find for the 351C?

What transmisison are you dropping in?

I think that Wilf had to machine several inches off the top of his Inlet Manifold in order to drop the Carb low enough to fit the Air filter under to bonnet. (Remember reading on the forum somewhere about it)

As far as the sucess of the project goes I am trying to get as much planning done beforehand in a hope that it will provide at least some modecome of smooth sailing.

Cheers,
Andy

RE: Ford 351 Windsor Quad 48 IDA webber conversion

I've just recieved a reply from Pierce Manifolds and the Quad IDA conversion kit retails for $3700 and is 10 1/2 inches high from centre bottom of the manifold to the top of the trumpets...

Can anyone give me an idea how this compares to a regular setup.........???

Cheers,
Andy

I cant help with measurements as i have not decided on which kit yet let alone got one!!

Depending how authentic you want to go and in case you havent seen it then TWM do an injection system for ford V8's thats very similar looking under the bonnet to the webers but with modern injection technology...

(Authentic looking but modern)
