Re: dax brake servo/master cylinder

Don't bother with a servo, unless you have a disability that stops you pressing on the brake pedal. I originally had 2 small Hillman Hunter servos on my 85 DAX and the bloody thing locked up every time I went near the pedal. I ditched them both and fitted a Jag XJ6 master directly to the pedal. My brakes are perfect now and take no more effort than any other car. They also have a lot more feel to them. cheers. Mark.

Re: dax brake servo/master cylinder

427scr,

Interested to know more about your brake set-up now that you have got rid of the servo.

What brakes, rotor size, pedal box, etc. are you using?

The Jag brakes on my AK lock up fairly easily and I'm thinking about replacing the Marina master cylinder and servo with just a suitable master cylinder but don't know what to fit.

Any help/advice would be appreciated...

Re: dax brake servo/master cylinder

the current Dax set up uses the servo and master cylinder from a Mk5 Escort I think only the clevis arrangement on the end of the operating shaft needs to be modified. :thumb:

I really need to know why it has taken so long to build your car?

If it uses a dolomite rack it may be worth updating the steering system to the later Mk4 Dax set up, which suffers far less with bump steer. :thumb:

Re: dax brake servo/master cylinder

Simon,
Your local auto parts supplier should be able to supply you with the master cylinder from a MKV 1.4 Escort (jul 90 - Dec 94) without ABS. Should be around £45 + VAT.
Kev Davies mentioned the latter steering rack set up but if you do stick with what you have check the clearance between the steering rack gaiter and the susspension mount throughout the full range. On my 85 chassis it fouled (even with the smallest of gaiters) so it wouldn't have impressed the nice men at the SVA. After first talking to DAX I relocated the rack by welding on small extension plates. As a added bonus the car doesn't suffer from bump steer. Sorry to give you another check to do but after 18 years one more won't matter.

Regards
Simon

Re: dax brake servo/master cylinder

I used a Mk2 Astra - nice and short in terms of mounting - seems to "feel" ok - but the fronts occiasionally lock up under heavy breaking!

Re: dax brake servo/master cylinder

I have a 1985 chassis, that has evolved slowly over the years. My pedal box is not dax, I made it myself. I use a standard XJ6 master cylinder from the servo, bolted directly to the bulkhead. The rod that connects the pedal to the cylinder is a modified go kart steering arm with a rose joint on the end. The master cylinder has its own integral reservoir, the brake pipes connect directly to it and pass to the brakes via a brake fail shuttle switch and a limiter on the back from a Mini. All of the brakes are standard XJ6 in size, but the fronts have red dot discs and pads. This system works great. I have done 50k miles in the car, it was my only wheels for five years. It has been to Le Mans 3 times and numerous other trips.
