Dax bonnet

Just another question, this time the bonnet, I have the large scoop but having offered up the edelbrock 14"on top of the holley 850DP on top of the Big Block on top of the Edelbrock RPM manifold!!! it looks like the bonnet will be marooned!! I could go for a 2" filter not 3" but even then I think I need more room, has anyone any knowledge/experience of reglassing the scoop? or other ideas?I cannot lower the engine it's low enough already. Thanks Dave

Re: Dax bonnet

Just done something similar with my AK, theres some pics in my gallery, takes a lot of patience .

AK do a scoop but not sure if it would fit a Dax, depends on the width.

Tony.

Re: Dax bonnet

Depending on which Dax scoop you have they do about the biggest standard scoop going as far as I know. I have also just changed my scoop for the same reasons but am pretty sure that the largest Dax scoop is still quite a bit bigger still.

Re: Dax bonnet

Dave

Just saw your post, I had the same problem with my 460, I had a Ford Performance filter, you can cut the small flange off the bottom of the filter and I welded a support ring on the base. This dropped it right down so the lid of the filter is 2mm off the top of the air tube in the carb. I still had to make myself a new scoop to fit. If you want you can borrow my mould and make your self one. You will have to mod the flange once made to fit you bonnet given that most bonnets wont be the same. It's based on an original Cob GRP scoop from the states.

Like you I dont want to reduce the sive of the sump and can not get the engine lower.

Re: Dax bonnet

I had the same problem with my Ford 302 touching the bonnet. The only answer was to change the manifold for an Edelbrock Performer. Looking at the Real Steel catalogue, the Performer manifold for the Chevy is about one inch lower than the RPM manifold.

Re: Dax bonnet

Dave

Just about but had a bit of another project in the summer, restored a 1980 280e Merc for every day use, got a bit carried away and it went to a full blown restoration, superb car, they dont make em like that any more.
Just waiting to drop the body back on, waiting for a few more bits next week. Engine bay is finished and painted satin black, made a dual cylinder brake set up with adjustable bias. rather than go for ally engine bay panels I spent weeks getting the cr*p Dax engine bay panels to fit right, looks much better and a dam sight easier to keep clean now. Also just waiting for a prop to arrive. Bought a load of bits when the $ was weak, got alloy heads, roller rockers, 3/8 pus rods, complete gasket set, chrome alternator, HO starter motor, loads of shiney bits and a complete ARP engine bolt kit for $1900, inc shipping, ordered on Friday, arrived my house Thursday. Of course it was necessary dear.
Keep in touch

Re: Dax bonnet

I have the same problem with my 351w... and not by an inch but much and much more...

a. lowered the engine to 6 cm below chassis
b. put the engine more backwards so the highest point of the engine is at the highest point of the bonnet
c. bought a moroso low airfilter (still 3" filter because do not restrict the air flow too much)
d. remove the air filter nut on top which was too thick

i hope this will help.

Re: Dax bonnet

Thanks again all good advice, will try all avenues, at the end of the day it's only another!! problem to get around, Dave sounds good I'm a little jealous, had to sell my brand new edel ally heads to move things on, mind you I have a set of fully sorted C9 heads, ported big valves etc done by a guru in the states, I abandoned the stainless panels in the engine bay, did them all again in mild steel, then had them powdercoated black, keeping things black/stainless, I'm putting a shorter tailshaft on the C6, hopefully found the bits in the midlands, good to talk to you. Dave
