Re: Dax Exhaust Manifolds

Clive, If it's not a rude question - How much did it cost?

Cheers

Re: Dax Exhaust Manifolds

Nick, just my two penneth worth but your heads in the photo do look unusual.

I've got Edelbrock heads on my 350 and the plugs do not stick out at right angles like yours do put are angled, they also look further down the heads than yours do.

Could be just the photo's, but maybe worth looking into??

Good luck and no, you're not the first person to have problems with DAX supplied parts!!

Re: Dax Exhaust Manifolds

A couple of ideas.
1. If you have a problem with a part, ring the manufacturer (Experts) just to be sure before asking a group of ametures (No disrespect meant) how it should go together.
2.You will almost certainly have to remove the spark plug to get the pipe in for cylinder no. 8
3. If you don't have angled plugs you will find that it is tight to the exhaust. (But should clear)
4. To date I'm pretty sure I have never been able to slot the pipe for no. 8 down from the top (As in the pictures). you have to weave it in.
5.Extended footwells are a nightmare. (Not much help but a fact)
6.The manufacturing process might hinder the fitment. These things (Being made of stainless) are a pain in the 4rse to manufacture. A jig can only be used for setting up and then they have to be removed to be fully welded, this is where the problems arise, stainless (When heated) distorts in a big way. To get around this the whole manifold would have to be made in one piece, but then you would have to fit the manifolds into the engine bay before the engine.
7.The whole thing could be made much easier if 1.5" pipes were used and the bends were tighter but this would screw up gas flow and could result in melting a few pistons.........Now that would be a problem.
8. Sometimes parts of this nature can be manufactured incorrectly due to there being so many variables in the production process.

Summary.
Call Dax, speak to Peter and explain the problem.
(The same goes for all the different manufacturers oif you are having problems with the fit of their parts).:thumb:

If you think a RHD extended footwell is a problem you should try a LHD, a whole different world of 5hit.

Re: Dax Exhaust Manifolds

Thanks Dave for the ideas, I managed to get the passenger side headers in over the holiday. Rear pipe is actually touching the footwell though.

Drivers side - No chance - front pipe and 2 middle (joined) ones go in OK with a bit of bashing on the edge of ally panel at top to give the pipe a bit of clearance. Rear pipe is not even close to fitting. I can't even get a plug spanner on to the plug to remove it as the tip of the plug is 28mm from the ally panel.

Measuring the clearance needed for the rear pipe - I am about 20mm short. It seems that when Dax fitted the ally panel on the drivers side for me they left an air gap behind it, and also because the footwell had to be removed and reglassed it is not in the correct location - which compounds the problem.

I will call Peter and ask what can be done next week.

I think there are 2 options:

Remake the pipe to go upwards instead of down - Or - Cut a large section out of the footwell side to remove the spark plug and fit the header and then replace and reglass the section around the header. Similar to how they fit the big block pipes.

Unfortunately both are beyond my limited skill.

Ho Hum!!

cheers

Re: Dax Exhaust Manifolds

Thought I would resurrect this post to update my original post about problems with Dax manifold fitment. Set the record straight so to speak.

After lengthy discussions with Peter Walker about the problems I was experiencing with my Manifolds not fitting, Dax collected my car and have sorted the problem out Free of Charge!!

They had to take the engine out to sort the problem which invloved cutting away the drivers side Aluminium panneling and re making it to fit the rearmost manifold. They have done a great job. They have also created clearance around other tight spots to stop the pipes touching the body. There must have been a considerable amount of work carried out. My thanks to Dax especially Peter and Dylan.

They also sorted out a few cock ups I had made due to ignorance! I mean how can you fit the lower front wishbones the wrong way round?

Anyway, I can now move on and actually run it without deafening the whole neighborhood!

Cheers

Re: Dax Exhaust Manifolds

Great result Nick.
I'll have to try that one, I'll then be able to build cars in half the time it usually takes.

Yeah I know Ben. Spent ages looking at wishbone diagrams in the jag manual, asking questions etc and STILL managed to get it wrong. Wonder how many others made the same mistake?
