Dax Handbrake cable

Not sure I have the correct handbrake cable. Do I need to modify the handbrake caliper in anyway to allow the Dax supplied cable to fit?

As it stands the U-shaped end of the cable with the cotter pin through it will not go over/engage with the end of the handbrake caliper. Do I need to drill out the swivel part of the caliper that the origianl cable would have gone through???

These annoying bits at the end of a build!!!

Re: Dax Handbrake cable

Here's a picture of the "offending" cable.

Have had another look and it doesn't appear to fit correctly at either end!

Even turned it round, still doesn't fit!!!

Re: Dax Handbrake cable

That looks spot on to me ( at least the same as the one supplied by AK) I had to drill out the U-shaped end as well for it to be able to move freely.

Re: Dax Handbrake cable

Cheers Tinka, can you confirm, did the U shaped clamp on the left in some way fit the handbrake caliper or did you have to remove the bit in between the two halves of the handbrake caliper?

Re: Dax Handbrake cable

Hi Jonny

Here are a few pics of how mine is done. Hopefully it will help you. As you can see there is a special L-shaped bracket that is used with the half moon bracket to mate the whole system of cables together. You have to get this from Dax. The Half moon bracket is an XJ40 part. You may know that already though.

Re: Dax Handbrake cable

Sorry for the poor picture of the rear but I think it shows you what you want to know. Yes the U-shaped bracket does fit to the nearside hand brake calliper. HTH

Re: Dax Handbrake cable

Jonny

I've had another look at the cable you have and it's only threaded on one end. The one I is threaded on both ends complete with 2 nuts on each end. I guess you are not building the De Dion version. Therefore I'll be about as much use as chocolate fireguard as the two cables are totally different.

I can't remember how I did mine now. But I would think one side of the U bracket goes in the middle of the caliper arm with the other side on the outside. Hence the long clevis pin to go right through the arm.
Make sense?

Re: Dax Handbrake cable

My pictures are for the XJS,6,12 set up Bogsters are for the De-dion set up that is why they are totally different. Not sure which you have although from the look of your cable it looks like the XJS,6,12 to me

Re: Dax Handbrake cable

Hi John.
There are two types of handbrake caliper lever arm, the cable is really designed for the other type of arm, but do not fear. Cut out the swivel part of the caliper arm and slot the cable between the forked end of the arm and then re fit the pin, job done. I have also seen some cars whre the builder has manipulated (Read "Bent") the fitting on the end of the cable so that it fits around the swivel part and then turn the swivel through 90 degrees and fit the pin through the swivel and the cable.
Not the end of the world and can be sorted within a couple of minutes.
