Fuel pump and filter

A couple of questions guys if I may,

I've put in the fuel pump as suggested (by the manual I think) with the top of the mounting plate level with the top surface of the chassis rail. However, if you look under the car the pump now hangs down quite a long way below the chassis rail - about 25mm. It seems to be the only thing that hangs down this far (although haven't got the tank in yet). Is this right, or should I make a plate to mount the pump on about an inch higher? Does it matter that the inlet to the pump will then be quite a lot above (I think) the outlet of the fuel tank.

Second question - I was looking where to put the paper fuel filter. Is there any reason why it shouldn't be mounted in the space between the chassis rail immediately behind the seat (n/s) and the de dion beam - i.e. below the drive shaft - there is a lovely big space for it there and it can be above the chassis rail (vertically) and have at least 30mm clearance below the drive shaft (at full extension of the chassis because I've got it jacked up).

Thanks

Jon

Re: Fuel pump and filter

I noticed that as well with my car Jonny and your right, its probably the lowest component to the road surface and looks quite precarious. I mounted mine as per the manual but have since moved it upwards by about an inch. Its now higher than the lowest point of the chassis and still clears the rear tunnel internal surface so it shouldnt get knocked off on any bumps, etc. I have made a steel skid plate bolted onto the diff which also houses/protects the fuel filter.

Jon

If your fuel pump , or any other part of the fuel system for that matter, projects below the chassis rails then I`m sure it will fail SVA .
Think about those speed bumps .

Re: Fuel pump and filter

I have my pump mounted in the same place with the bottom of the pump approx. level with the bottom of the chassis rail. Still not to happy with "push on" coonectors on the bottom of the pump, don't seem to really positively engage.

Wouldn't like to be over taking something when one of those fell off!!!

Looking at the instructions that came with the pump they do a version with threaded studs instaed which I feel would have been much better.

Re: Fuel pump and filter

For a De Dion mount the pump on the beam that runs across the car in frot of the driveshaft (Where the brake pipe flexie's fit. Tons of room.)
Sorry, can't help with the astd chassis as I always fit a mechanical pump on them (Cheaper, quieter and safer).

Re: Fuel pump and filter

I don't see how the car will fail the SVA if the fuel pump is lower than the chassis, both engine and gearbox are below the chassis rails.

Of course they are but neither one of them is likely to spray petrol all over the place should they receive a knock ,just a lot of hot oil (not much fun for the guy following).

SVA will check position of all fuel components section, 15.2 in manual, it may pass it may not but why take the risk. There`s no mention I can find about markings on fuel pipe but people seem to have failed on these.

Personally I wouldn`t dream of putting a fuel pump below chassis rails it`s just asking for trouble in my opinion.

Re: Fuel pump and filter

That's what I thought tony - trouble is it is not what it says in the manual, and when it is your first project you are tempted to treat it as a bible rather than a guide of moderate interest every now and again!!!

Following on from what people have said I am going to move the pump so that it is above the chassis rail.

Any thoughts on my suggested position of the fuel filter guys, that is - below the drive shaft next to the diff?
