Brake pipes

As I expected the brake pipes are too long where they go into the master cylinder. I have toyed with the idea of putting in an 'engineers loop' but I think it is going to look bad. Anyway, I have got hold of a flaring tool from a friend, so I can cut and re-flare. Only problem is that the tool that I've got does flat ended flares rather than the convex ones on the original kit. I have tried one though and done it up, and it seems to seat pretty well when inspected after. Is this likely to work or do I need to put the convex flares on it?

Thanks,

Jon

Ask yourself this. Is it worth risking my life & the lives of other people? Never try to skimp and save money on brakes. Lives depend on them! (Especially when using an extremely powerful car)

Re: Brake pipes

The double flare ends can not be substituted with a single flare (convex) end. It may well appear to seat poperly but under harsh braking and pressure it is sure to fail.

The correct tool is the matter of only a few £ and as quite rightly said you cant put a price on a life.

Re: Brake pipes

wasn't trying to skimp on the brakes - just wanted to know whether the various flares were interchangeable (as the convex doesn't seem to seat properly either) or whether I needed to find the other bits for the tool.

Re: Brake pipes

Just looking for the relevant dies - does anyone know what the flares on the end of the Dax de Dion brake pipe kit are called - I assume that they are double flares (from what chimeara said). What is the diameter of the pipe? Am at work and want to get them asap if possible so can't go and meaure.

Thanks,

Jon

Re: Brake pipes

Tinka,

Will that do the double flares that I need? It doesn't seem to say on the website. Also have you used one - the only reason I ask is that I bought a set of spring compressors from Machine Mart and the thread was stripped before I had done the first spring. Thanks for the help.

Re: Brake pipes

I have used one a friend of mine has it so it has done all the work for his car and some of mine. To do the double flare first you use the flaring yoke to in effect create the bulb effect then you dispose of the yoke and do it up without and as the there is a point on it it creates the type of flare you are after.

Re: Brake pipes

the other thing to note although it may sound stupid is make sure your union is on before you form the flare. I have done many a flares and had to cut them off because I forgot to put the union on.

Stupid but true

Re: Brake pipes

Thanks Chimeara - don't feel left out - I have wired many a machine plug and still I forget to put the cover on before I do up all the connections. I never mind being told the obvious - we all miss the obvious and there is nothing more frustrating.

Thanks
