Mike,

BMW use an electric vac pump for their brakes, so this could be used if in doubt about engine vac.

I am looking at using one for my brakes if I decide that I need the servo(6pot calipers with 380mm rotors) as I have no combined inlet manifold to take a vac from (individual inlets to each cyl)

hope this helps.

My set-up has individual manifold has individual runners too and I just feed the servo from one of them. Quite surprisingly, it works fine.

Another thought is to use an alternator from a diesel, many have a vacuum pump built in specifically for powering the brakes.
