Oil cooler bracket

Call me very anal - a lot do - and see pic I posted last night, but I don't like the look of the bolts on the underside of the front scoop that holds the oil cooler on.

My plan therefore is to make a bracket similar to that holding the radiator on from the 2 front arms of the chassis across the front. Studding to hold the oil cooler would be welded to that bracket. The bracket would then be bonded to the front scoop with wurth. Are there any problems with this idea?

All comments appreciated.

Cheers,

Jon

Re: Oil cooler bracket

Hi Jonny
Why not use dome headed set screws, they should not stand out to much.
or use u shaped bracket, bonded using wurth or glass into position, and two small brackets on each end of cooler [top] running forward and fixed to underside of mouth opening.hope this helps
Andy

Re: Oil cooler bracket

when you say 'u shaped bracket' andy, do you mean the shape that I suggested running from the chassis? If so, why do I need the additional brackets at the top as if it is attached to the fibreglass it doesn't seem to be necessary.

Thanks for the help,

Jon

Only a worm could notice the bolt heads on mine as it's so low.

Re: Oil cooler bracket

I know Kev - same on ours - but I lie awake at night worrying about these things so I might as well do it as I want in the first instance. As I say - see Bogster's post about the oil cooler and my brake pipes - only 2 days work!!!

Re: Oil cooler bracket

Hi Jon

I made brackets for my oil cooler. I took them from the bottom of the oil cooler and attached them to the bottom of the radiator bracket. I also made some for the top of the oil cooler to the horns. I'll send you a pic if you like if you let me know your email.

Cheers
Lee

Re: Oil cooler bracket

A good idea to not rely on the fibreglass alone to hold the oil cooler.

Another is not to rely on the bottom flange of the oil cooler alone.

If you want to just use the bottom fixings, here is how to do it and not overstress the oil cooler itself:

Buy some M6 studding (threaded steel rod), and some ally tubing that slips over it nicely (B&Q have a selection of both). Also some dome head M6 nuts and shakeproof washers.

Cut four pieces of the ally tubing to fit snugly between (inside) the top and bottom lugs of the oil cooler- two each side, assuming you have two mounting bolts each side.

Now cut the M6 threaded rod into lengths which allow you to put the dome nuts on top, and on the bottom after you have passed through whatever it is you are mounting the cooler to.

Tighten it all up with shakeproof washers at appropriate places. The ally tube spreads the load between the top and bottom mounting flanges of the oil cooler, and stops excessive loading throught the bottom flanges alone.

Hope this helps. Attached pic might help - ignore the cable ties, I was experimenting with an additional fan on the oil cooler.

Re: Oil cooler bracket

Could I take both the top and bottom bracket off the radiator bracket, if the bottom of the cooler were bonded with wurth to the fibreglass?

Re: Oil cooler bracket

Thanks for the email Lee - it looks very good. With reference to the way that you have done it, do you think that you could use the radiator bracket for the top brackets too, or is there a reason for going back to the chassis with those?

It seems to me that the biggest problem is going to be turning and pushing force rather than movement up and down, but I might be totally wrong.
