Brakes Bleeding (De Dion)

Hi,

Managed to get my brakes bled last night. However I noticed in the installation manual it mentions removing the one of the two bolts holding the rear calipers and putting the rear calipers vertical to put the bleed nipple at the highest point. To me they already look as though they are at the highest point. The bleed nipples on the front calipers however are much lower down on the calipers. Is this a typo? Should it be the front calipers that are required to be put vertical?

In saying that The brakes seem to be operating very well and not a single leak even with firm pressure applied to the pedal. Glad I invested in the Automec flaring tool.

I also managed to temporarily hook up my slave cylinder to test the clutch hydraulics. After bleeding out all of the air the clutch system the slave is pushing the clutch fork approximately 1 1/4" on full extension of the clutch pedal. I used 7/8" for both the master and the slave. Incredibly the clutch pedal is not very difficult to operate. I did attempt to change into different gears but no success however I didn't have a proper stick shift so slightly difficult to operate. Is it a case of trial and error (i.e. adjusting position of clutch fork by extending slave cylinder push rod) until you find what works?

Re: Brakes Bleeding (De Dion)

Dave,

I checked my brake calipers and low and behold the bleed nipples on the front are at the top so I don't have to swap them around. Also the bleed nipples on the rear are at the top. So I'm a bit confused about all this lifting calipers up etc.

Cheers and thanks for the help

Re: Brakes Bleeding (De Dion)

Hi Colin.
The rear caliper mounting bolts need to be in a vertical plane in relation to each other when bled and not in the horizontal as they are when mounted. They are vertical when fitted to the Jag so there is no problem like this on the Jag.

Re: Brakes Bleeding (De Dion)

I knew there was someting I missed when we spoke on the phone.

Thanks Dave, I'll lift them up, stick the block of wood in and bleed as required.

Cheers Mate.

Re: Brakes Bleeding (De Dion)

I bled now my brakes for the fifth time and no bubbles ...
did it according to sequence (rear left, rear right, front right, front left..it is a LHD).
Using a master/slave are from a Ford escort according to Dax manual (not new) and the rest is from Dax (jaguar revised brakes).

symptoms;
first few centimers...it feels too soft...
the following centimeters it starts to build up pressure after 4 pedal strokes it is at its hards but only those last few centimers..the first few centimeters stay soft.

when starting the engine...the servo kicks in...the whole pedal travel feels too soft...when rolling the car, the car stops when braking but will it be enough ?
What is enough brake force for a Dax ?
When I go to a garage with a testbench..what are the numbers it will have to get ?
and is this normal (soft travel in the beginning) ?
Regards,
Andy
