How much fuel do you get your tank..?

Hi All
I have some fuel probs at the moment. Not sure whats wrong but I only got 100 miles from the last 10 gallons of fuel
Not sure why but I have been used to getting approx 170, 17 per gallon for the past 3 years.
Also, approx 10 gallons £45 is the max I have been able to get in the tank.
Anyway, I asked Kev Davies at Stonleigh how many miles he was getting per fill (he has same setup as me) and he said 250. He then tols me that he can get nearly £70 of fuel in the tank.
I am fairly sure that I have a Dax tank. Are there different sizes?
Maybe the guage is not reading right and it says it is empty when there is actually £25 left in.
What do you other DAX owners get in the tank?

Re: How much fuel do you get your tank..?

Brian, I think I've got the same tank as you. I'm sure, but I think it's an MG one. Dave can confirm obviously.
Mine holds about 10 to 11 gallons or roughly £45 (for the time being). I get about 17 to 18 mpg on a run, but just playing it will be a lot lower.

You could have a float stuck in your carb, enough to waste a lot of fuel but not enough to totally flood the engine. What fuel filter set up do you have? are they clean?

Cheers,
Neil

Thanks Neil - not sure - what do they look like?
Can you simply remove, clean & replace?

Re: How much fuel do you get your tank..?

Brian, check your fuel line from the tank to the carb to find any filters in line. Maybe a clear plastic type near the carb?

Don't bother cleaning plastic ones, they're only about a quid each. Make sure you get the larger one though, there seems to be only 2 sizes.

Better check your floats as well though, I've sent you a pm with my number if you need any help.

Brian.
If you have the Dax tank the sender for the gauge will be under the carpet in the boot floor. If you have the poverty spec tank (Like Neil ordered) the sender will be on the off side of the tank underneath.

Hi Dave,
sender is on the top so the Dax one it is. Guess that means that there is approx £25 in the tank when the guage reads empty. The guage reads empty now after drive home tonight so I tried sticking some pipe down the fuel filler as discussed. I used garden hose but it was difficult to tell see how far up the fuel was on the pipe.
Is it worth taking the sender off and looking in from above as is therre is a problem the sender may need adjusting anyway?

Still need to fix the overfuelling issue too - will be a busy weekend.

Also, see the pic below - is this a fuel filter / pump or neither?

Cheers Dave, I could not find a anything else that could be a filter. If there is not one, could it be that some dirt has clogged up the floats on the carb?

Is it worth fitting a filter?

Re: How much fuel do you get your tank..?

Could well be worth fitting one but the carb would need cleaning anyway.
If there is a problem with the floats then you can usually see fuel dripping inside the carb (Take the air filter off and look down the top) when the engine is at tick over.

I have checked this already - no fuel dripping in on tickover.
