Manifold Clearance

Hi all,

I've been working on the installation of my Dax header pipes. Everything fits in perfectly however there is only about 10mm clearance between the side of the footwell and the rear header pipe on both the offside and nearside. I presume this should be ample? I can't see how you could make anymore room if you needed to anyway.

If you have fitted your headers I'd be interested to know what type of clearance you have on your car?

Thanks

Re: Manifold Clearance

Bigger gap than mine, the only thing I can say about mine is they don't touch the footwell panels!

As you say there is hardly any room regarding the rear headers (no. 7 & . Trouble is if don't have them almost touching they end up fouling the plug leads. As long as they have some gap that will be fine.

Re: Manifold Clearance

Cheers MJ

It all starts to get a bit of a squeeze in the engine bay as you get closer to finishing. On a separate issue I haven't bought the sidepipes yet and was wondering how they fit onto the header pipes. Do you know if they slide over or inside the header pipes and how they are fixed? Are there some sort of gaskets that seal between sidepipe and header pipe connections?

Thanks

Re: Manifold Clearance

The headers fit inside the sidepipes and are a very good fit. I wouldn't tighten the two end headers on each side fully as this will make it very difficult to fit the sidepipes. Tighten the central two and then put the sidepipes on and then nip the end two up.

Regarding gaskets etc, the sidepipes come with some firegum, exhaust assy paste, which fully seals the headers in the sidepipes.

Havn't done this on mine yet and the pipes need to come off again for the car to be painted, they seem to seal pretty well without to be honest.

Re: Manifold Clearance

10mm clearance is more than I have on the exhausts!

I agree with what john said about fitting the pipes. Leave the end ones loose and fit the side pipe then tighten everything up afterwards.
I didnt use any exhaust sealing paste as the pipes had to be removed afterwards but they didn't leak and they were a pig to get off again before the paint job.

Craig.

Re: Manifold Clearance

Nos 7 and 8 were touching the footwell sides on mine. DAX remade no 8 for me and 'Bashed' the ally panel on No7 to fit.... Ho hum.

Only problem now is No 8 pipe touches the plug boot. I didn't know that silicone could catch fire? That was until it did......

Have had to buy some glass fibre sleeves to go over the plug boots.

10mm clearance sounds OK to me? My headers are less than that..

Cheers

Got to do this on my big block. Clearance maybe as little as 1/8" as long as the headers do not foul the foot wells when engine is under load.

Dax say use the firegum and fit at least two self tapping screws to stop the side pipe falling away from the headers. Also supplied is two long self tapping screws to fix the outlet pipes to the main silencer. Drilled and screwed from under side to pick up on the center baffle pipe.
Do not like the screws in the headers so I will look at a better way to fix them!
As many four letter words as required can be used while fitting these exhaust systems!

Not a very nice way of fitting a £1,900 exhaust system!!

Re: Manifold Clearance

Hi Bogster

I passsed my SVA recently and there was only anout 1 - 2 mm gap between footwells and header pipes. SVA man made no comment what so ever, so I assume that as long as they are not touching anything, you'll be fine

Re: Manifold Clearance

Why can't they use springs like motor bike exhaust systems??
