Engine bay wiring

Just musing as to how best to run the wires in the engine bay (Simon will dispute that musings are continuing and is likely to say that the decision has already been made so this might get ugly!!). However, how big an issue is heat on the wires in the engine bay.

I was thinking of running the wires for the engine (rest not a problem) from the bulkhead and along with the heater hoses to the front of the engine where they will divide to alternator, water temp and oil pressure send.

Will this be ok?

Thanks guys

Are you using the DAX supplied loom and what engine, Ford/Chevy/Fiat?

sorry - should have said.

351W engine on the De Dion chassis.

Are we using the Dax loom - obviously not - that would be far too easy!! Simon is making the loom up himself. Time consuming but I think there are going to be things that nobody else has (for once) which should make the car stand out by the end. I am currently trying to persuade Simon not to go for the neon strip lighting under the car!!

I ran two main looms down either side under the bonnet lip in heatshrink tubing to each corner for lighting, rad fans, horn etc.

Another loom runs along the inside of the drivers rocker cover for the alternator and is secured with P clips to the rocker cover bolts.

This gets rid of the ugly wires trailing across from the body to alternator.

A forth loom supplies all the engine sensors and ignition.

Hope this helps.

I would personally shy away from attaching directly to any water pipes. any split could give rise to generation of a steam (hot water at pressure suddenly meeting atmospheric = instantaneous change of state). Steam is very good at cutting through the most important things and wiring insulation will not be a problem to it. Been there done that.

Also there will be effects from the expansion (giving rise to fatigue failure) and heat generation (affecting current capacity and insulation performance and heat cycling of the insulation will deminish the overall lifespan of the insulation).

Don't forget that all the loose wiring should be protected in some convoluted conduit. This may give you some protection but best to route away from it in the first place.

Then when you are done, Come round and finish mine off!!!!

JT, I'm not sure the SVA chaps would accept having your wiring loom atttached to water hoses (just a thought). I used the Dax loom as I just didn't want the hastle of making one and I'm not a electrical boffin.

As far as layout if you go to the following post I've explained mine to Nigel previously. this is the link to the post.
