carpets in footwell

Started with the interior trimming. I have dax set from the trimshop. It's a puzzle but I managed, until I reached the footwells. I have contructed my own fiberglass cover for the hinges and to cover the heater in the passenger footwell.

I now realise that the carpets from the trim shop are not likely to fit my home made covers.

Can any one help? How are the carpets fitted in the footwell, especially taking into account the door hinges AND the heater?? Pictures maybe?

Re: carpets in footwell

I stayed clear of the Dax carpet because I thought it looked tacky with all the different bits. I made wooden panels to cover the windscreen and door hinges then carpeted them. The panels are attached to the scuttle hoop bracing by drilling and tapping holes in the scuttle hoop. Also made panels for the doors and just below the doors.

I've attached some pics that may be of use to you. I have a ton of pics of how i made the panels if you want to see some of them.

Hi Bogster,

Did you do the carpeting yourself? If so, how easy is it to get the carpet to go around all the tight corners and strange angles?? It looks like a nightmare...

Did you use lots of smaller bits of do it all out of one larger bit??

Simon

It's easier than it looks. Just use heavy duty carpet adhesive and take your time. Also use velcro strips. You can get it from coverdale in rolls of whatever you like by the metre

Fitting carpets is one of the easy parts of the build, buy a roll of good quality carpet from Carpetright or similar, go to your local B&Q and get yourself a roll of the reasonably thick wallpaper and use it to make templates.

Hi Mike
The carpetting looks a nightmare to me. I have tackled lots of awkward jobs, but the carpets are a deffo no no.
If you want to come to Donny for a couple of days Mike, you can do my carpets .
How much do you think it would cost to pay someone to lay the carpets? I have the roll of carpet, it needs cutting/shaping and fitting.
Sorry to hijack the post and put a negative slant of carpetting.
Cheers
Kevin

Kev I'm with Mike here although it looks a nightmare once you start to do it it is surprisingly easy to do. Like mike says get a good roll of backing paper and start making the templates and it all soon starts to fall into place.

What about sound deadening / underlay. We've got quite thick stuff for the boot - presumably we just put that on with spray adhesive, then put the carpet on top with velcro??

Hi COlin,

Haven't heard how things are going for a while - hope its all been SVA'd and is now on the road - probably having too much fun to have time to be on here!!

Looking at carpet and I'm not sure I like the dax kit either. I think the question Simon was trying to ask was at the bottom of the footwell / under the seat, in the picture you have, it looks very neat and almost as if it is one piece. If it is, how did you do this - if it isn't how many pieces is it and how did you get such neat joints? I need to know this so I can properly direct my mother, who has kindly volunteered for the task!!

Thanks,

Jon

Don't think that buying the Dax kit will eliminate all the trimming and cutting involved as it won't. I brought the Dax kit as I liked the vinyl edging and I wanting a leather top to the transmission tunnel but it still required a lot of trimming and fitting to get it right.
I also brought the edging in the same navy blue colour as the carpets so I wouldn't have white lines running everywhere.

It was fairly easy to fit though and I think I ended up with a good job done. If you do decide to use the Dax kit don't use spray adhesive as it does not seem to stick to the rubber / silicone backing to the carpets. Use a big tin of brush on impact glue and it will never fall off again.

Craig.
