Dax 3" perforated baffles for sidepipes

Hi all,

I received my replacement 3" baffles for my sidepipes yesterday. Inside there was two long self tapping screws which Im not too sure what they are for?? I noticed on some of the pictures craggle sent me there was a self taper just behind the cone but I dont quite understand what it is there for.

Also I noticed the end section of side pipe which the flat tail of the baffle slides into is pre-punched for 3" diameter pipe. At present it has a reducer spot welded in it. I presume I cut the spot welds and remove this so i can slide in the 3" baffle.

Thanks for any help.

Oh dax sent me new fibreglass packing too.

The long self tapping screws go through the outer side pipe and secure the front of the baffle with the cone on it to the outer pipe. I assume this is to stop rattles from vibration. The screw goes through the hole in the outer pipe and screws into one of the holes in the perforated tube on the new baffles.

I managed to pull the reducers out the tail pipes with a pair of pipe pliers. Just bend the welds a few times and they will snap right out. Clean up whats left with a file and job done.

Craig.

Thanks Craig,

I guess what confused me was that there wasn't any self tappers fitted to the 2" baffles on my sidepipes.

Thanks again

Hi Colin

Does that mean you had no problems at SVA without fitting the 50mm self tappers?

If you don't have any holes in the outer pipes then it may be a chance to do the job properly. I made my own baffles by buying 3" perforated stainless and making my own cones for the front end. I took the opportunity to weld a small bracket and a 6mm nut onto the cone to clamp through the hole in the outer tube. A 6mm dome head stainless screw seems to work a lot better than a 2" long mild steel self tapping screw.

I also welded 6mm nuts on the rear outlet and bolted that in place to stop it twisting during use.

Baffles

I am interested to know how the baffles work in your sidepipes, as I gather they have perforated tubes as a normal straight thru style muffler, which is generally glass, ceramic or SS wool type material.

How do the baffles figure, are these plates additional to, or in place of the perforated tube? I have fitted auger style, and chambers with tubes and washers to try and quieten.

Antony,

The Dax sidepipe for passing the SVA has a 2" perforated tube attached to the four into one collector via a cone piece. The annulus between the perforated pipe and the inside wall of the side pipe is packed with a fibreglass blanket type material. To enhance the performance the 2" pipe can be removed and replaced by a 3" perforated pipe and still using the fibreglass to assist in deadening the noise and for heat insulation. There are no baffles such as the type you mentioned.
