differential rebuild guide

Tried a search but lost the plot after reading several dozen...

I've got a 3.58 p'lock diff from a 94 XJ40 which I want to rebuild.

Having wasted my money on buying a Haynes manual already which tells me absolutely nothing, can anyone recommend the best source of info on stripping, inspecting, and rebuilding one?

Happy to buy a guide, just don't want to waste my money on the wrong one! Are the workshop cd's any good?

As ever, thanks in advance

Keith - unless you are very used to overhauling differential units, my advice would be to employ the services of Russell Ram, and have him do it for you. He the man..........and that would be echoed by many here.

Hi Keith

I managed to download a complete copy of the Jag workshop manual off the internet (and about 400mb it was too). I'll happily email the final drive section to you if you want it. There's useful info in there about checking crownwheel tooth wear pattern by taking off the rear cover to see if there is a problem.

Beyond that I'd echo the other posts unless you are experienced in this area. I'm a time served mechanic and have rebuilt numerous gearboxes but I wouldn't either the experience or tools to successfully rebuild a diff.

Hi Lloyd, please do,

I wanted to do as much of the build myself as I can, but from the sounds of it I should maybe pm RR tomorrow.

Still, interesting to take the cover off and see the state of the gears, I can see if they're scrap or not before I waste anyone's time.

Know the feeling, although I've quickly learned in some areas its not worth it. Rebuilt the front calipers only to realise its not much more to buy recon units all nicely plated and shiny.

If you want PM me your address and I'll burn the lot on a CD and drop it in the post bag at work tomorrow. Otherwise need your email for the final drive section.

Keith,

Another thing I would add is that the diff will be a real nightmare to get out if you are building a Dax after the body is on. Its hard enough without anything around it.

Might be better to spend a few quid to get it done properly on this occassion.
