Joining collector tubes and down pipes

Just received the complete exhaust system from Dax. Concerned as to how you fix the downpipes to the collector. The manual says simply "Engage the collector tubes with the down pipes". Yes, but how do you ensure it all stays together? Exhaust paste will not do it. There must be a simple solution which involves inserting a bolt or pop rivet through both. Any ideas? Thanks.

I have the same under the bed to fit some day soon. I tackled Dax about this and they said to line everything up as per manual then drill a hole in the two underside collectors and fit a self tapper!! Bloody £2k for an exhaust and fix it with self tapping screws!!!!! I will be looking to weld some sort of fixing to the pipes, but need the engine back in the car first. Some day.........................

There is also a long self tapping screw supplied with each side pipe to fix the outlet section and baffle tube in place. Will be wrapped in tape somewhere.

My pipes came with a "shark fin" attached - weld a similar item to your headers and use either bolts or wires to hold your exhaust together

I fitted the headers to the engine but left the front pipe and the rear pipe on each side loose. Fit the side pipes with some exhaust paste then once in place tighten the front and rear pipes from the engine. I found the front and rear pipes when tightened actually holds the pipes in place.

I have driven a few hundred miles now and they have not moved and I am fairly sure they won't. I had hell of a job getting them apart when I got the car painted.

I trial fitted mine, marked them up and drilled through into the lower front pipe, then put in a self tapper.
I think this is how Mr DB does his too.
When I bought the car they were wedged in. Some months later after a spirited drive ( luckily I was in traffic at 10mph) it got very noisy and the offside pipe came out. Luckily no damage done.Hate to think what would have happened if I was going quick. Very embarrasing moment when, white van man and his mates who i'd previously blasted past gave me some very choice comments along the lines of F'in & w@nker, complemented with some nice hand movements.

Thanks Guys. I agree that when you pay £2k this item should be well sorted. I think I'll go for a couple of pop rivets rather than self tappers. But I'll speak to Dax too.

Couldn't quite see at first what was wrong with your set up?

Then it was obvious.......

Some buggers pinched your engine!!!!!

I thought they were a bit quiet!

I have used slip joints with springs for some time now. It can give some valuable extra clearance for underfloor systems and makes life so much easier when it come to removal.

I must remember to squeeze the engine in between when I put them back together.
