Red warning light

Hi all,

When I go round a corner fairly quickly a red warning light illuminates on the dash. It only comes on for a few seconds, I only noticed it tonight in the dark as I drove home. Also it will flicker if I accelerate quickly, I did not build the car but suppose it must be engine oil level light? The oil is at the top mark as I check it before driving the car. Hope it is not something more serious!?

Could be the brake fluid warning light, that could come on during hard cornering/accelerating if slightly low.

It may be your oil light, have you got an oil pressure gauge also? In an unbaffled stock sump it would normally take long sweeping corners to move sufficient oil away from the pick up? Can you isolate the warning light to work out which system it is warning for?

If it is oil then you may want to think about fitting a baffled sump or slowing down the cornering or acceleration.......I would fit the sump and continue having fun

Bojay sounds like your low brake fluid warning light to me. If you have the Jaguar reservoir there will be two wires going into the top and inside there is a float mechanism. When teh fluid is low it allows the two contacts to connect and illuminate teh warning light. It is easy enough to check.

Many thanks guys,

I will look into your suggestions, it has a Moroso sump, not sure if that is baffled? Will check fluid brake fluid levels.

Does this red light come on when you switch on the ignition but before you start the engine? If so does it then go out when the engine is started? If it does the I would suspect oil pressure. If it stays on (but goes off when the handbrake lever is off) then I suspect the brake fluid is low. I don't think many people utilise a low oil level light these days, but it is a consideration.

Hi Clive,

No the red light only comes on when going round corners/accelerating hard, so think it must be brake fluid. Have not checked levels yet, still under dust sheet in garage with all this rain we are having!

I see from your profile it is a Dax you have, I have just looked at the wiring instructions sent with my loom (chevy) from dax, assuming it is a dax loom, the warning lights are as follow:-

Red - Charge warning light
Blue - Main Beam
Amber - Oil pressure
Green - Indicators

The brake fluid light is incorperated into the test switch.

Could it be that when you accelerating a dodgy cable connection on the charge alt is moving slightly as the engine moves due to the torque produced, giving you a flickering warning light. If that makes sense.

Hope this helps,

Russ

Doh! just seen it's in the dax forum anyway, must read properly!

Anyway another thought is the charge alt belt could be slipping slightly under hard accleration. Would it be possible to run a couple of cables from you batt or charge alt into the cockpit then hook it up to a multi meter, with the engine running you should see 13.8-14vdc.

Go for a spin with a passager and ask them to moniter the meter, if the voltage drops off at the same time as your light comes on, fault found. If not i would check all the wiring to ensure all is O.K.

The two cables coming off the back of the warning light should be Green(+) to centre terminal and brown/yellow to the rim.

Russ

Thanks Daxman

I will investigate your theory, I think I may e-mail the guy who built it and check. I probably should of done that in the first place! It's actually the red light which looks like a rocker switch next to the fog light control it has a ! mark on it also.

Thanks
