Electrics.....what works and what doesn't

Well tries not to cack my pants while imagining it going up in flames but decided to give the electrics a go....heres the results:

What works:
All warning light on dash...blue, red, yellow, green
indicators
dipped headlights
hazzard warning lights
horn (bloody hell does the horn work! think the whole neighbourhood knows)
main beam
windscreen wipers (only works slow and fast don't seem to have intermittent)
washer jets
Volt meter
Brake lights

What doesn't work:
Flashing main beam without dipped headlights on seems to fuse every time
side lights front and back don't seem to work
Lights on dash instruments don't seem to work

Anyway need help guys. any ideas are appreciated as always

Hi, are you using a newer steering column (round hazard button) or the older type (square hazard Button)The reason is i beleive if you wire up the newer column as per the dax instructions it constantly blows fuse's. You have to modify the dax loom and add a relay (easy job), to use the newer column. I have a diagram showing you how to modify the loom if you need it.

Talking of electrics going up in smoke.

Half way through my Sumo build, last week I turned the key to ignition and smoke started billowing out of my wiring loom.

Reason. Have a mallory ballast resistor bolted to my bulkhead. Turned out the ceramic core was not held securely by the clamp which attaches it to the bulkhead. The core had slide down inside the clamp until it jammed against the positive terminal bolt.

On turning the key a fair old amperage when straight down the ignition wire shorted against the bulkhead frying the wire and resulting in me having to pull apart the loom (for hours) to sort out the wiring damage. Very Pi55ed off. So if you have a Mallory balast resistor you may want to make sure the ceramic is well clamped!

i've got the round hazard button and am currently using the dax additional relay. Think i might have forgotten to plug in one of the live wires to pin 30 (apparently) which will be why my side lights aren't working. Still not sure why flashing my headlights causes the fuse to pop though.any ideas

It might be possible that when you go to flash your headlights you're getting a dead short, thus popping the fuse. First thing I would do is carry out continuity checks on the headlight circuit. Also check that none of the feed(live) wires are going to earth.

Try it without the bulbs in. If it still does it then you can eliminate the bulbs.

Are you sure the bulbs are the correct type also?

Hi Simon.
Switch off the hazards (if they are on) before switching the high beam flash and see if that cures the fuse problem.

Success!!! changed a couple of things... a brown lead had fallen out the back of the column switches and i had to swap leads about on the nearside brake light (was assured that they were connected properly the first time but once i checked myself could see the brake light was attached to wrong terminal). So everything works!!!!! (still to check if dials work but can't really do that till i get the exhausts and then run the engine). Very very very happy . Thanks again everyone (esp, Mr DB, sorry for bothering you the other day was desparate to get things running)

Cheers
Si
