Sump Removal

Does anyone know whether it is possible to replace the sump/gasket of a 383 chevy engine from the underside of the Dax De Dion chassis? I cracked my sump whilst in France and having got a new sump pan need to go back to repair it. Not having done this before I wanted to check that its physically possible with clearances, access to bolts etc. Is it a straight forward job?

Can't look at my own car as it's stuck in France!

Thanks

SJ

Should be very easy.

remove the oil filter to give more room (you will be changing it anyway as you will be changing the oil) and all the bolts are easily accessible.

Just make sure everything is clean and oil free before replacing the gaskets and you should be fine. I believe some silicone is required for the join between the cork and rubber seals.

Craig.

Craig,

Many thanks. I'll let you know if I'm successful. Operation Recovery has the green light from the wife for this weekend.

Regards

SJ

Fortunately no. I hit a metal stump in the middle of a gateway into a hotel we were planning to stay in. We left it in the hotel car park which was pretty secure (locked gates overnight). I collected it successfully yesterday and everything was as I left it with no damage.

I trailered the car back in the end; no problem with customs.

Regards

Glad you got it back safely SJ

I couldn't sleep at night if I didn't know my car was safely locked in the garage at home! Guess you didn't have a choice though.

Good luck with the sump replacement.

Craig.
