steering column

Just a quickie. I have just been trying to adjust the steering column now that the dash has been reconstructed and amended etc etc. I had set it some time ago but since then the car has been to Dax and because of the way the headers had to be fitted it has all been moved about.

Anyway, the hazard light indicator is now about 3" from the dash - previously we had it set to be about 1" away if that. I think I remember adjusting it by contracting the sliding parts of teh steering column to the right length. This now seems to be stuck solid and won't budge. Am I making things up when I remember that these bits slide over each other or does it just need a little bit more (or less) gentle persuasion.

Thanks,

Jon

By adjusting everything (and not sliding the two sections over each other which I am told is very bad) the steering column is now only 1/2" out of place. Looking at teh bottom of the shaft it seems that the splined bit that Dax welds on is protruding into the footwell by about 1". Is this splined section splined all the way up as I can't really see at the bottom of the footwell.

If it is I can't see any reason why this shouldn't be reduced in length by 1/2" and then put back in place. Any comments?

Thanks guys,

Jon

steering column

Hi Jon

The bottom end of the column is triangular shaped which should pass through Bulk head and the bottom bush [ford part] which is fixed to the engine side of the bulk head via a dax supplied bracket, the splined bottom then allows you to connect up the ujs and shaft to your steering rack, hope that makes it clear, Andy

I thought that there was something that I wasn't remembering - the triangular bit is the original column isn't it?

When Dax made the headers they have had to change the steering column around to get it to fit between the down pipes. They have made a new bottom bracket and the triangular section finishes short of that bracket such that the circular section goes through the bracket but is visible for about an inch in the footwell.

Thanks

Jon

Jon I would check with Dax on the change, the bottom may not be in the bush, check to see if there is any movement at the bottom of column, Andy
