Its been a long time now since i built my DAX, but I can tell you I never liked the feel of the steering on my car. The V12 steering is very heavy when trying to park or manoeuvre. Its ok at speed, but I found it unresponsive with the lock to lock a turn off.
About five years after the car went on the road, it was damaged (nothing to do with the rack) and needed a new rack and one new front wheel. My wheels are still the 15" halibrand, and I had trouble sourcing it. I eventually had a new outer rim made to refit to my inner which was undamaged.
Anyway, what I was trying to say in my roundabout way is that if possible you should try to fit power steering to your cobra. I did this after the accident that destroyed my original DAX one and the difference in the car is amazing. I was helped a lot by a guy who pioneered the use of a Peugeot 309GTI rack on his own car, thereby solving a few of the problems before I bumped into them. His name was Steve Gullick. His descriptions and photographs helped me no end.
The Peugeot 309 rack needed shortening and brackets welding, but it works really great. As some will know it operated by an electric pump, not one powered by belts on the engine. The car is very responsive now, with less turns lock to lock and parking the cobra is like parking any modern motor car. I couldn't have done it without Steve's encouragement and advice on what doner rack to modify.
