What does everyone else use as an accelerator cable?

I have a SBC with Torker II manifold and an Edelbrock 1405 carb.
I have had a devil's own job finding and fitting an accelerator
cable to suit. The carb end is not too bad, but the pedal end
is frankly a wobbly mess of brackets and levers.

I just discovered last weekend that full travel on my loud pedal was
only opening the primaries half-way, and the secondaries on the carb
were staying firmly shut. I have modified the whole arrangement
somewhat, but the secondaries are still only opening halfway and
I just don't have enough room to modify my current set-up any
further. I'll see if I can take some piccies and post them later.

The good news is that I have discovered some major 'new' horsepower
for the sake of an hours work and no money. Bet I wont repeat
that very often any more...

RE: What does everyone else use as an accelerator cable?

Hi Stefan.
You can get a Holley universal throttle cable from real steel for about £20, it comes complete with bracket.
At the pedal end i usually cut off about 20mm of the arm and then drill a 3mm hole straight through about 10mm from the end from top to bottom and then counter bore about 4mm it with a 6mm drill on the under side, then cut a slot from the end to the hole to allow the cable to locate, the ball on the cable sits nicely in the counter bored part, you should be able to get full travel like this but check that the ball on the carb end can swivel freely cos they can be too tight a fit and need a little persuasion with an angle grinder.
Also tighten up the bolt that the pedal pivots on and then back it off until the pedal can move freely whilst eliminating excessive side to side wobble on the pedal.

Thanks Dave!

It all sounds rather easy and neat so I'll have to
give it a try. Sure beats messing around the Halfords
parts bin looking for a random cable that might fit...

Will let you know how I get on.

stefen

I had a similar problem with the universal throttle cable and on searching the local breaker's yard found rather a neat plastic clip from a Peugeot 205. The end of the dax pedal needs to be modified slightly by reducing the thickness or you could trim down the plastic locking clip to fit. Also the ball on the end of the cable needs a slight tweak with a file to provide a pair of flats.

Hope this is useful

I measured the length I needed and ordered it from real steel. They are a pig and a compromise, I know.
