| Steering column..any other types? Hi all I've been trying to get a steering column for my Dax. Ford main dealer told me they don't sell them as a complete unit, and to buy all the indicator stalks, column etc individually wasn't my intention (and is costly). The local breakers haven't got any Sierra's in, but walking around looking at other columns made me wonder if other Dax builders have used other columns, perhaps a now more widely available one such as a Mondeo, (they had loads of those in the yard) with more up to date looking indicator stalks? Either that, or find a supplier of complete new Sierra steering columns, ready to install. I know Dax list them, but I was hoping to get one cheaper if possible by buying direct from a Ford specialist. Also, what's involved with the Dax modification, and can it be done at home, to save me having to take the column to them? Seems the easy thing is to buy the ready modified column straight from Dax, but I always seem to look for a harder way of doing things! :} I'm also thinking if I had to use the Sierra column, I'd convert the stalks to stainless steel rather than the plastic ones they have. If so, any advice on how to do this please? Thanks for all advice received Mat Current progress: 383 Chev being built in the USA, Tremec TKO in a box, and various bits on the shelf! | RE: Steering column..any other types? Use a pullout column for the Sierra, get the ignition keys if you want to use the steering column lock and ignition switch, you still need the key for the column lock if you want to use it for SVA theft deterrant, you can always disable it later on & use a dash mounted switch if you're inclined. The dax modification is to weld on 2 inches of splined shaft to the bottom of the column, it costs £25 or so, and they'll do that while you wait. Dax sell the stalks new, quite cheaply I thought, far cheaper than ford, use these through SVA, then modify the external visable stuff with Stainless after, using the original switchgear as a base to ensure it all works well. you can cut off the stalks, make up switchgear to sleeve over the remaining stobs that are left, and its done. You might have to rewire the horn from the end of the column to the centre of the steering wheel, but thats easy enough. To modify another column to fit would be really a pain as you'd have to modify and rewire all the connectors etc used on the stalks

| RE: Steering column..any other types? Thanks Steve for your input. Perhaps I should have explained, I won't be using a Dax wiring loom, so I'm not fussed about having Sierra stalks. I'll make the loom to suit whatever connectors I end up with. I'm dubious about using an old column, but reluctant to pay for a new one from Dax (I'm careful, not tight! lol). Surely there must be an independant Ford parts supplier who's bought some new old stock columns from Ford? Anyone found such a place? Or getting back to my original question, anyone fitted a more up to date column that would have seen less wear and tear, such as out of a nearly new Mondeo or suchlike?
