1st hot run-fan thermostat querry

Fitted the oil cooler lines this week end and bolted on the side pipes. Ran the engine to operating temp for the first time. All guages work (horray!)but I can't get the fan to kick in. I have the Dax supplied thermostat device with the little wire that runs into the top water hose. I think the problem is down to the connections on the 'stat. There are three terminals on there, but only two wires to connect to them. I've connected to the 2 outer terminals, but the fan then runs constantly. I know I will need to adjust the reostat, but can some one advise me which terminals to connect to? As a back up, I've wired in a fan override switch on the dash as I don't trust those things.

SVA now beckons. I need to sort out some SVA wing mirrors as replacement to the bullet style I've have at the moment. Can anyone suggest a cheap SVA temp fix for the wing mirrors, as I don't want to spash out on expensive compliant ones which I will dump after SVA?

RE: 1st hot run-fan thermostat querry

Mark,
Had you run the engine long enough for the radiator to become hot?

When at least the top half of the radiator is hot, stop the engine.
You should then be able to hear the thermostat "click" as its control is turned.

As a test, connect the two 'stat wires together. The fan should run.
If not, check the electrics.

If the fan does run with the stat bypassed, all you need to do is pick the correct 2 connections on the stat.
If it's marked "COM, NO, NC", you need to use COM and NO.
The fan should run with the control turned towards a LOWER temp, then go off as the control is turned to a HIGHER temp.

If it works the wrong way round, swap one wire to another terminal.
If it then works correctly, you're done.
If not, swap the OTHER wire to the other terminal. (leave the one you previously moved in its new position)

When you've got the stat to switch the fan, set the control to about 5 or 10 degrees above normal running temperature. Too low and your fans will run almost continuously.
