Fuel tank dimensions

Hi guys

Can someone who's got a Dax stainless steel fuel tank supply me with the necessary dimensions, and perhaps a photo or two please. I've got a friend who conveniently happens to be a stainless steel fabricator/TIG welder, so I was hoping he could make me one cheaper!

Cheers! Mat (the cheapskate)

Current progress: 383 Chev arrived from the USA, Tremec TKO in a box, and various bits on the shelf, but no fuel tank!

RE: Fuel tank dimensions

Matt,

Is it for the std chassis or the de dion?

If it's for the de dion I can help with photo's (check out my site) and measurements but if it's for the standard chassis I can only provide photo's.

Regards

Michael

Michael

Thanks for your response. I should have specified, I've got the standard ladder frame chassis. Photo's will be great, but if anyone has got one unfitted that they can obtain measurements from, that would really help. Photo's/measurements for the fitting kit would be helpful too.

Thanks

Mat :tu

Hi Mat,
I have a drawing with the dimensions of the fuel tank that I made for my DAX Cobra it will fit but it was required a lot of rotations to get in the cobra.
It is located above the rear suspension, in the top compartment.
The reserve volume area was a box welded to the large box; this one was perforated to allow fuels to pass to the reserve area.
At the left side of the reserve area I have mount the fuel pump.
Visit my webpage to see more drawings.

RE: Fuel tank dimensions

I shall be taking my tank out in about 2 weeks time if you can wait that long.
You are welcome to come & see it (Hoddesdon Herts) or I can measure/photo as you require.

RE: Fuel tank dimensions

Michael

Thanks for your photo's and all the help you've given, you're a star!

Cobra289, thanks for the diagram. I had planned on putting the tank in the conventional under boot position. What reasons did you have for putting the tank in the boot above the back axle?

Baldric

Thanks for your offer. I've already been provided with photo's from Michael, and also dimensions for his tank, (for the DeDion chassis). We're not sure if the standard ladderframe chassis tank has any differences in it's dimensions, and so I can certainly wait until you remove your tank to receive some dimensions from you also, just to check. That would be really helpful.

I had a word with the fabricator today and he talked me through how he'd make the tank, test it and certify it, and it all sounds really good (and a good price...more money now to spend on the shiney bits!) Apart from checking the dimensions (pretty important!) I just need to get a sender unit so he can make a suitable mounting plate for it, which I assume will mean I'll need to work out which gauges I'm going to use, unless there is a standard 'fit any gauge' sender that I can use? Any help regarding that gratefully received!

Cheers! :tu

RE: Fuel tank dimensions

Mat,
My tank is fitted to a super tube chassis although I feel sure this will be the same for the standard chassis.
The Dax tank construction is actually very good with extensive internal baffling & lower swirl pot. It works a treat & despite everything I have thrown at it has not yet given me any fuel starvation problems or noticeable roll when cornering. This said, the aluminium (anti-explosion?) swarf they put in the tank is a nightmare & regularly gums up my filters, I strongly suggest you find a different solution to this problem.
As for a fuel sender, barring the real expensive electronic units, most operate from a universal sender available from Europa & the like. I have a spare new unit-just in case- & could measure various detail for you if you wish.
If I have not given you dimensions in the next two weeks, give me a nudge ( I will probably have forgotten cause I am getting old & senile).

RE: Fuel tank dimensions

Cobra289... I had a look at your website and LPG tank picture. A very neat installation. I'm just wondering what is underneath your boot floor, if your petrol tank is above the back axle?

Baldric...I'm pretty sure the tanks are all the same, as Dax only list one type, just in different materials. I'm not doubting that Dax construct their's very well, but I can get one made for less than half their price through a stainless fabricator/tig welding colleague at work, who reqularly makes tanks. He too recommended against the Explosafe swarf. I'm not sure I will bother with anything like that. My main aim is to have a well baffled tank to prevent fuel slosh and starvation, especially as I'll use the car on track days. How many of our regular cars, that we drive every day have explosion-proof tanks? I think I'll take my chances with the Cobra!

One thing I'm curious about, is that you mention a 'swirl pot'. This sounds rather fancy, and I'm not sure what it is or why it's there! I know there's a low point where the fuel pipe stub exits the tank, but I assumed it was nothing more than that...a sort of sump. Is there something I'm missing?

If senders are universal, I think it's safest that I buy one and hand it over when I get the tank made, then if any holes are wrong it's their fault and not mine!

So if you could supply me with the dimensions from your tank when you remove it, that would be great. I will give you the desired nudge (as requested!) if I don't hear from you within a few weeks.

Cheers all

Mat

RE: Fuel tank dimensions

Just in case you didn't know an MGB tank can be modified to fit a Dax quite easily.
I believe it's a case of repositioning the filler tube.
